Weather finally broke after two months, less six days, of warm sunny weather. Forests will benefit. 121 S&R Flight Canso remained overnight, departed this date without passengers. AFHQ, ADCHQ and 5 Air Div. HQ CPOs departed civilian aircraft. FS Shaw moved into first completed suite in Bldg 32. Mrs. Shaw took over the Snack Bar.

Routine. Weather still unsettled. Minor accident with bus transporting dependents to Tofino on shopping run.

Unsettled. Cpl. Klassen arrived by sked with family. Sgt. Hughes moved into second TMQ suite – Bldg 32. F/L Hoffart departed.

Cloudy – rain in evening. Unit visited by WO1 Roy, AFHQ/DCED, who was checking the building details of Building 11 for addition to the Recreation Hall, and construction of proposed swimming pool.

Air Force Day. Rain in the morning – clearing in the afternoon. Children’s sports held in morning with full participation by all ages. Prizes were provided by PTA. A 3-team softball tournament was won by the RCAF. Kennedy Lake Logging Co. and Native Sons (Indians) were the other teams. The celebrations concluded with a beach party for all personnel. A CF-100 from 409 Squadron Comox provided thrills for station personnel and visitors alike with performance of low flying and aerobatics. Perhaps the best show of the afternoon was that put on by a native eagle which wheeled and soared over the sports field for a good part of the afternoon.

Clear – but promising rain. Usual drill parade in the morning. Guard of Honour in afternoon. FS Fairchild caught 39 lb. Spring salmon.

Fair Day. Ladies Auxiliary "stag dinner" at Clayoquhot Hotel, Clayoquhot Island. Ladies transported by bus and boat. NPF boats receiving plenty of use. Another large salmon caught – approximately 37 lbs. by Mr. Zelowski, BC Power Commission employee.

Sunny and warm. CAS, A/M Slemon and wife arrived in North Star. Normal work routine. Picnic luncheon on beach in early afternoon for officers and A/M and Mrs. Slemon. Mrs. Slemon presented with Indian basket. Dinner in evening with CO. CAS to stay for a few days rest.

Cloudy. Dominion Day celebration in Ucluelet – F/L Robinson requested to judge floats. RCAF participated in softball tournament and lost. CAS departs late afternoon – presented with 15 lbs. salmon on ice, by CO.

Clear and bright. Normal routine. P/O Macklin of 30 Wing HQ (Aux.), Calgary, reported in for two months continuous duty as assistant to Adjutant.

Cloudy, rain in afternoon. Drill parade and practice commences in the morning. CO well satisfied. Sked in. Five FtrCop replacements, Cpl. Clark (Accounts0, LAC – Rec. Spec arrived on TD as replacement for Cpl. Howis. Regular routine.

Weather clear. Group Commander’s Inspection Day. A/C Orr and Rev. JW Robinson arrived Service aircraft 105 hours. Ceremonial parade very successful. A/C began annual inspection. Obviously pleased. Entertainment in Officer’s Mess during evening.

Clear and bright. Group Commander completed inspection. A/C Orr, Rev. Robinson departed for Vancouver 1000 hours. Routine – normal.

Fine weather. Normal Saturday routine. Swimming classes at Kennedy Lake commenced today under guidance of RCAF instructors. Some 125 children from Ucluelet, Tofino and this unit will participate.

An accommodation team from Ottawa composed of the following personnel, arrived Tofino 1445 hours to conduct a survey of accommodation requirements: A/C Whiting, Mr. Bush of AFHQ, Mr. McDonald of Treasury Board and Mr. Davis, an assistant Deputy Minister. G/C Jardine, Commanding Officer St. Hubert, visited the station while on leave in this area. Station routine – normal.

Continuing clear, but cooler. F/L Cote (RC) and F/C Millman (Protestant) Padres arrived for weekend religious services.

Cloudy and cool. Clearing towards afternoon. S.L Laithwaite (MATP) Rec. Spec, F/O Jacobs, 5 Air Div. Welfare Officer, and Cpl. Maletta, AFPmn, arrived. F/L Robinson departed on sked on leave. S/L Laithwaite had long discussion with recreation committees. P/O Macklin – Acting/Adjutant.

Continuing cloudy and cool. F/L McDonald, Protestant Padre, in for weekend services. Sgt. Sheppard, 5 Air Div. Hygiene Inspector, carried out inspection of Station and departed PWA in afternoon. Offered several suggestions for improvement, but stated he found the unit in excellent condition. S/L Laithwaite inspected unit. Very satisfied with recreational arrangements.

Clear and bright. S/L Laithwaite, F/O Jacobs, departed via PWA. Expeditor in from Comox; F/L Eddy reported on board, failed to arrive.

Continuing clear and bright. At 0630 hours, a fire alarm was sounded signifying an outbreak of fire in the Combined Mess. Bacon which was being prepared for breakfast caught fire. The Fire Department responded. The fire was controlled, and the all clear was sounded shortly after. The original fire had spread to the upper section of the kitchen. Minor damage resulted before the Fire Department again sounded the all clear at 0910 hours.

W/C Kent, SOPA ADCHQ, was impressed with unit, especially Hobby Shop and Library. He commented that the Library was the best he had seen.

Clearing to sunny. A Sports Banquet for all service personnel and guests held this evening. Annis Stukus, noted football player and sports writer, guest of honour. This visit arranged by S/L Laithwaite and through courtesy of "Vancouver Sun". One hundred and eight personnel enjoyed this evening immensely. W/C Turner and Mr. Stukus presented sports trophies to teams and individuals. See attached newspaper account. Major Andrews and Captain Taylor, RCDC, arrived for dental services.

Clear and bright. Remembrance Day - Honour Guard of 30 men to Tofino; F/L Bell A/CO and F/L Robinson, Officer’s representatives. The efforts of the Guard were much appreciated by the local populace. The guard were well turned out and executed all movements smartly. Much credit is due to FS Fairchild, NCO i/c Guard.

Clear and bright. A/C Ross, Division Commander - 5 Air Div, arrived for informal inspection. W/C and Mrs. Turner returned from leave. Inspection of domestic site carried out in a.m. and inspection of Operations site carried out after an informal luncheon in the Officer’s Mess, at which time, all officers were introduced to the Commander. The Commander departed at 1500 hours. W/C Turner, F/L Eddy and F/O Meyer departed on TD to Comox.

Clear and bright - then frosty. CO expected in off leave. Aircraft grounded by fog at Vancouver. Aircraft from Port Hardy with Holberg basketball team grounded at Tofino with engine trouble. Security team also on a/c, and personnel forced to stay overnight. Sadie Hawkins dance not too successful. Obvious from attendance that all-rank functions do not receive the support of personnel unless they are very special occasions.
