Section IV – SPEC/FTR Controller

The following is an outline of the activities of the Spec/Ftr Controller section for this period.

3 Jul 64

16 Officers and 46 Airmen/Airwomen arrived at this unit from 2405 AC&W (Aux.) Halifax, for two weeks contact training and to participate in Operation "Checkpoint".

9 Jul 54

F/O DBJ Roche appointed unit Defence Officer effective 9 Jul 54 vice F/O CM Robinson. The regular summer exercise this year known as Exercise "Checkpoint", commenced this date for a three day period.

10 Jul 54

F/O CM Robinson left to attend Ftr. Controllers course.

13 Jul 54

F/L Wallis departed on TD to ADCHQ.

17 Jul 54

F/L Wallis returned from TD at ADCHQ. F/O Roche returned from TD at Mont Apica.

20 Jul 54

F/L Wallis left for 2 ADCC, St. Margarets, on TD.

24 Jul 54

F/L Hill departed on TD to Sydney, NS.

29 Jul 54

F/L Hill returned from TD at Sydney NS.

1 Oct 54

A/Cpl. WM Raines promoted to Cpl., LAW Katterhagen to Cpl. F/O Standing returned from TD at 21 AC&W Sqn. Where he carried out IDENT. A/Sgt. MacDonald departed for two week NCO course at 1 SSTS, Camp Borden. Sgt. Mosher departed for six week NCO course at 1 SSTS, Camp Borden.

F/O Andres returned from RCN Stadacona after attending Current Affairs Course.

17 Oct 54

F/L Wallis left for EDAF Conference at Stewart Air Force Base, Newburgh, NY.

22-23 Oct 54

C45’s from 104K Flight were on GCI exercises on 22 and 23 Oct. Twelve practice interceptions were carried out.

25 Oct 54

A/Sgt. MacDonald left Oct 25 for advanced radar course at DRML Toronto.

5-6 Nov 54

Two officers, four airmen and three airwomen from 2405 AC&W Squadron (Aux.), visited Operations for practical training.

8 Nov 54

Cpl. Lynden and Cpl. Pare arrived here on TD from 21 AC&W Squadron to familiarize themselves with CFP-6B equipment.

15 Nov 54

Sgt. MacDonald returned from three weeks course at DRML Toronto. NCO i/c Operations, Sgt. Mosher returned from six weeks SST course at Camp Borden.

20-21 Nov 54

Two officers, four airmen and three airwomen from 2405 AC&W Squadron (Aux.) visited Operations for practical training.

29 Nov 54

F/O Standing appointed visual Air Co-Ordinator vice F/O Roche effective 25 Nov 54.

 

Section VII – Telecommunications Section

  1. Following are extracts from Telecom daily diary for inclusion in the historical records.
  2. Operational
  1. 2 July 54 arrival of 2405 personnel for Exercise Check-Point.
  2. 24 hour shifts kept by Radar Tech and PC’s over radar equipment.
  3. STAT Teletype circuit operating over a 24 hour period with TT Ops personnel on day shifts and FCOs operating the machine during the night shifts.
  1. Technical
  1. Radar was off the air for unserviceability for only about 2% of the available time. During exercise Check Point although only an hour per day maintenance period was allowed the Techs were able to keep the radar serviceable during required time.
  2. VHF at this unit during the exercise proved to be very satisfactory.
  1. General
  1. WO2 G Edgerton assigned to SWO’s duties while WO2 Abram went on annual leave.
  2. Sgt. Lavigne arrived to take charge of Crypto and Message centres.
  3. One radar Tech sent on course during the month.
  4. All Crypto publications were amended to date and all necessary register and file system set up.
