The following is an outline of the activities of the sections under command of the CTSO.

S/L CR Barrett assumed command of RCAF Station Beaverbank on the following dates: 12 Aug - 22 Aug; 13 Sep - 21 Sep; 6 Oct - 13 Oct; 17 Oct - 19 Oct; and 4 Nov - 18 Nov 63.

In July the unit stated SAGE Peaking trials and by August the Western Electric Company came on the unit to start SAGE Sub systems testing. The sub system testing was completed in Nov at which time the unit went on temporary SAGE inputting.

The RCAF accepted the FPS-26 from the contractor.

While RCAF Station Beaverbank is not scheduled to commence performing in a SAGE role until 1 Jan 64, satisfactory progress during September makes it appear likely that the unit will be prepared to accept its new responsibilities by 1 Nov 63. RCAF Station Beaverbank took part in a SAGE Tactical Evaluation exercise on 14 and 15 September. Observers at Bangor noted and commented on the high quality of the data from Beaverbank and the prompt and accurate work of our Height Finder operators. While Station Beaverbank has been making plans and preparations to accommodate 6 CU early in 1964, word was received on 30 Sep that all action was to be deferred for 1 year.

The following is an outline of the activities of the Operations Section for this period.

Trade advancement for two FtrCop airwomen attempting October trade board under way. There were no live exercises during the month however three synthetic exercises were held.

WO2 CH Jackson appointed Station Ground Training Officer (SGTO) vice WO Y Boissonneault. F/O RJ Hornal appointed Public Relations Officer (PRO) vice WO2 Y Boissonneault.

Unit assumed temporary SAGE condition until 1 Jan 64. FtrCops start manning DMCC. This unit was advised that effective 1 Nov we would no longer be required to maintain a surveillance and an identification function, however we will still be required to control interceptors as we will be on temporary SAGE condition unit 1 Jan 64. Since all FtrCop personnel will no longer be required in Operations, 20 personnel were assigned to CTSO for manning of DMCC, and 12 other personnel were misemployed in various sections on the station. These personnel are on a standby basis and we could be called upon at any time to revert to a manual state.

There were no synthetic exercises held during the month however live exercise "Top Rung I" was carried out.

Operations staff worked with CGEO staff to coordinate complete handover of the Operations site to Technical personnel.

COpsO relinquishes all operational responsibility to CGEO. Unit assumes SAGE role with no further manual back-up.

The following is an outline of the activities of the SGTO Section for the period.

AMCHQ Provisional Manual Oct 62 received and passed to F/O Long SSupO.

During the month of July, the films "Electronic Warfare Ground Environment" (Confidential), was shown to all crews in Operations. Also seventeen general interest films were received and screened by all crews. These films are kept for one week and are obtained from The National Film Board of Canada in Halifax.

Four volumes and tests of ADC ManEng Course were sent out to ADCHQ for marking.

F/L Champagne attended French Language proficiency board at MACHQ.

Received 801-PR MedA exam for 231242 LAC Banfield GA. This airman did not write the exam as he had since changed his mind in favour of BEC.

Film 14C/3877 (Restricted) "Broken Arrow Procedures" obtained from MACHQ Film Library. Shown to all Operations personnel and passed to Fire Chief. Twenty-three general interest films ordered and shown to all Operations crews.

Purchased "Made Simple" books at a cost of $1.47 each. Electronics Made Simple ea. 1. Physics Made Simple ea. 1. Bookkeeping Made Simple ea. 1.

During month of Aug 6 volumes and tests of the ADC ManEng Course were handled.

Telecom Equipment training package for AN/GKA-5 and AN/FRT-49 - material for 15 students. CTSO will advise when course will be given, how many will participate and names of instructors.

ADC Management Correspondence Course - Received Cpl. J Moorhouse’s final exam results for the course and his certificate of success.

Telecom Equipment training package for AN/FPS-26A Sections 1 and 2. Ten copies of each section. This OJT program will consist of 5 section handbooks. Purpose of package is to instruct Military and contract civilian personnel on the equipment.

Provisional Trade Examinations - Sgt. Chevrefils, Cpl. Makarenke and LAC Dyke sat for provisional ATCA group 3 exam. Distributed study material for Senior and Junior QE’s (extracts from AFAO’s). 1 copy to F/O Foster, F/L Smith, F/O Long, F/O Orford, SGTO.

Provisional Trade Examinations - LAC L Cooney sat for provisional MetOb group 3 exam.

Films - 6 Fire Drill films requested and received from Fire Marshalls office in Halifax. These were passed to Station Fire Chief for viewing by David Hornell school children.

ADC Management Correspondence Course - Cpl. E Plourde wrote final exam.

Film - The film 14C/3922 Physical Fitness Evaluation ordered on advice of CANAIRDEF and forwarded to SRecO for his use and subsequent report to CANAIRDEF.

ADC Management Courses - Registered 15 people for ADC Management Course #2. Sgt. Anderson’s remuster to DProc will not be considered at this time. May re-apply in 6 months time.

LAC Farrell’s application for remuster to BEC not approved by AFHQ.

Films - 16 mm - 12 general interest films from NFB were ordered and screened by all crews during the month. 18 films were ordered from MACHQ film library for the MSEO and shown in that section. 5 films on Fire Prevention were obtained from MACHQ and shown at the fire hall. 3 SAGE films were obtained through MACHQ for familiarization of Operations personnel. In addition 6 other films of general interest were received from MACHQ and shown to Operations personnel.

Accident - Cpl. Gorden missed corner at PMQ intersection causing damage to own vehicle. AFP to investigate. No further action.

Accident - Cpl. Loisier involved in accident in Rockingham. RCMP attended. Nil action by AFP.

Accident - GMC accident in Operations compound. Drivers were LAC Rorai and LAC Fraser. MSEO and Cpl. Bernard attended scene with AFP.

Discipline - On information from S/L Keele, LAW Rikley was placed on open arrest by the duty AFP for being absent from her place of work.

Loss - LAC CJ Byrne reported loss of his wallet. Recovered same.
Fire - Fire reported at GATR site. AFP and fire fighter to investigate. Nil results.

Fire - Fire alarm sounded in Operations building. Electrical box had shorted causing smoke. AFP and Electrician at scene with Fire Hall.

Damage - Call received from F/L Belovich that four boys had caused a power failure by throwing rocks at insulators. AFP to investigate. Nil results.

Disturbance - Call received from OO that there was a party going on at PMQ 100 and he would like to have it quieted down. AFP to scene. Party toned down.

Accident - Commissionaire MacLean involved in accident at Mt Denson and will be in hospital for a while. RCMP attended scene. Nil action by AFP.

MC Accident - LAC CH Gould reports that he struck a pedestrian on the Beaverbank Road at Kinsac Corner. The pedestrian, Donald Gould, received injuries to both legs. Investigated by RCMP.

Security - Patrols discovered GATR site furnace room doors could not be secured as locking bar was u/s. Repaired by CE.

GME Accident - Cpl. RW Armstrong reports that his PMC was struck by RCAF bus 108A30 at Operations compound. $25.00 damage to GMT and $125.00 to PMC. LAC RC Cameron, MSEOp charged under Section 101(A) NDA and awarded a $25.00 fine.

Security - Patrols discovered all GATR site perimeter lights u/s. Repaired by CE.

Personal Injury - Greg Andrews, son of F/L Andrews, suffered compound fracture of left arm, while playing in the Rec. Centre.

Loss/Theft - Miss Karen Calderbank reports theft of wallet and contents from women’s room at Rec. Centre. Wallet and contents located by complainant at her residence.

MV Accident - PMC operated by LAC Kristiansen struck a cyclist on Beaverbank Road approximately 1 ½ miles north of unit. Cyclist received scalp and arm injuries and was taken to hospital. Investigated by RCMP.

Loss/Theft - LAW Stryski reports loss of wallet and contents (CAFIB 20).

PMC Accident - Mr. Niemi (civilian), Burroughs Business Machines, drove his PMC over embankment at rear of Airmen’s barracks. Unit driving privileges suspended.

PMC Fire - Sgt. J Croft, Commissionaire on duty, reports car on fire approaching main gate from "on base". Fire extinguished.

Discipline - Disturbance reported at mess hall. Investigated by duty AFP and memo submitted to CAdO.

Personal Injury - Mess Hall reports that an airman had fallen down and injured himself. Cpl. Campbell taken home by duty AFP.

Discipline - O/C Burrell placed under close arrest by Orderly Officer. Subject lodged in cells.

Security - Security alert on unit. Operations and SG personnel in operation.

PMC Accident - LAC GA Banfield reports that he overturned his PMC off the unit. Approximately $750.00 damage to PMC. Not investigated by this unit.
Discipline - LAC FG Daniels, MSE, stopped at main gate, leaving unit. LAC Daniels impaired. LAC Daniels charged Sec 74 NDA and awarded $25.00 fine and 14 days CC.
