Resolution Island

1973 – Remains at Resolution Island – Bob Sampson

It is June 1973 - and close to 12 years have passed since the 920th AC&W Squadron ceased operation at Resolution Island. We know that some of the communications facilities at Resolution Island continued to be used for some time, and it would be almost another 14 more years before the site would be surveyed to serve as a part of the North Warning System.

This photo shows the remains at Resolution Island in June of 1973. Note that two of the radomes are gone but a third "inflatable" type radome was still in use. It contained some air/ground equipment and a vertical HF antenna for the ham station, VE8YI. The top of the antenna was attached to the inside top of the radome. The ground plane was the steel deck of the tower. Very effective. In 1973 most of the site was mothballed. No power, heat or water in most of it but the fire alarm systems were still maintained. I can't recall for sure but it seems that there was a staff of 6 or 8 plus a couple of DOT radio operators for the summer shipping season. This photo shows good detail on the Kennedy tropo dishes looking towards Frobisher Bay. The billboards towards Saglek were equipped with furnaces as a deice system. Two very acceptable curling rinks could be found in a building between the airstrip and the site at this time.
