    COMMENTARY

During the quarter, following major personnel changes occurred: Major James H Moon replaced Major Floyd J Hoenselaar as Squadron Commander. Captain Richard C Gregory replaced Captain William R Landis as Station Civil Engineer. Captain Maitland J Gunderson arrived on station to assume command of Operations, replacing Captain Robert A Fasulo. Also Lt. Rex Capling left for KI Sawyer AFB.

Since the last reporting period at least 17 live exercises have been conducted containing a total of one hundred and four target tracks.

During this reporting period the operations section had the following operational summary:

Total Tracks: July 1601; August 919; September 1362; Totals 3882
    Intercepts: July 244; August 143; September 134; Totals 521
ECM Time: July 65:30; August 80:16; September 72:00; Totals 217:46

Lt. John R Osborne and his associated technician, A/1C Gary R Broge, departed TDY for 60 days to take part in the 1961 William Tell Weapons Meet to be held at Tyndall AFB, Florida.

The installation of the rigid radome over the prime search was completed 23 August. The Radar Maintenance Section was flooded three times before completion of this project, but no damage to equipment was encountered. During July, all test equipment was calibrated. Installation of mobile radio units in all vehicles, motor pool, and transmitter building, was completed 10 August. After 1 August, the only means of contact with the Detachments was HF Radio. Approximately 200 messages were received from and forwarded to the detachments each month.

The BX store originally located in the Airmen’s Club was moved to a new location in Building S-9. New display cases and shelves were installed and more convenient storage areas were made available. Extensive painting has been accomplished inside the station. At the time of this report one third of the corridors have been repainted. Civil Engineering has erected two storage tents to facilitate the storage of bulk materials.

During the month of August the Annual IG Inspection was conducted by the 64th Air Division Team.

The following personnel conducted visits during the month of August: Brigadier General HL Neely, Commander, 64th Air Division. He was accompanied by Colonel PA Sykes, Vice Commander, 64th Air Division and Colonel Victor Milner Jr., Commander, Goose Air Defense Sector. Colonel Sullivan, Vice Commander, Goose Air Defense Sector also visited the unit during this period. Lt. Colonel Aberson, Commander, 641st AC&W Squadron, visited this station during the month of September.

SUNEC 1961 was received during this quarter. All supplies from the SUNEC shipment were stored and/or issued to using activities. The SUNEC shipment consisted of frozen foods, cry and canned foods, BX supplies, general supplies, equipment, and fuels. In addition to the SUNEC shipment, we received the majority of supplies and equipment from Fox Harbor and Spotted Island.

In the month of September the Squadron underwent 100% Influenza Immunization.

The station seems a beehive of activity with construction taking place in the theater, Airmen’s Club, Motor Pool, the renovation of supply for installation of the bowling alley, the new BOQ, and new Special Services Office.

Weather, Chopper Service, and Leadership are all contributing factors to our high morale.
