1999 - A Visit to Edgar – Bob Agar

The Pinetree Line radar station which was located at Edgar Ontario was known as 31 AC&W Squadron. This complex was operational between 1952 and 1964. The complex was sold to the provincial government of Ontario in November 1964 for the amount of $218,225 and became an Adult Occupational Centre (as the base was called) until 1999, a period of 35 years.

Bob Agar visited the remains of 31 AC&W Squadron on 29 August 1999. He spoke with a Burns Security Guard who was manning the main gate and was able to determine that the Ontario provincial government had recently removed all of the occupants out the Adult Occupational Centre and placed them into private homes.

The Ontario Provincial Police from various towns had taken over the old recreational hall and was using it for classes. They had been using the base off and on for police training and a number of other functions such as doing street take down practices. There were about 20 OPP vehicles on the base when Bob visited the location.

The government hopes to sell the 155 1/4 acres to a church group or as a company retreat. The base was in fairly good condition for its age. Bob had been attached to Edgar for pay and supplies when he was stationed at Peterborough in 1954.
