This bunker was completed in 1964 and was intended to protect certain members of the Provincial Government in the event of a nuclear war. They started to dismantle the interior in March 2001. They had to clear the earth from the bunker in order to break a hole in the wall to haul out the larger pieces of equipment such as the diesel engines and the air scrubbers. There was also the problem of cleaning up asbestos insulation. The bunker was 77,000 square feet and there was also a smaller bunker (17,000 square feet) south of the base which is also being demolished. I do not know what the purpose of the smaller bunker was - but I am trying to find out. If you recall, the bunkers were used as the Provincial Warning Centers and this is where the radar sites would have reported nuclear detonations to. They were also used by the communications people. It is hard to believe that there are some people who spent their entire career working in a bunker with no windows.
