20 RADIO DETACHMENT - SYDNEY, NS
October 1, 1943 to October 6, 1943

1 Oct 43

Weather slightly overcast. Calibration aircraft flew a total of 7 hours. Results were only fair. Had radio mechanics who were not busy loosen earth in front of buildings. Planted grass seed.

2 Oct 43

Weather cloudy, fog. No flying. Followed TCA out 65 miles. Wind became high and were forced to tie aerial down between 0600 and 0830 on Oct 4/43.

3 Oct 43

Weather cloudy, drizzle of rain in afternoon. W/C Laut and F/O Isaacs and four others were killed in a crash visible from our detachment. Very little flying. Calibration aircraft forced to return to field with leaky oil line. Direct line to Sector gave trouble at 1400 hrs. Trouble was traced to poor connection in microphone at Sector - repaired.

4 Oct 43

Overcast, rain slight. Calibration aircraft flew from 1252 to 1600 hrs. Sgt Elliot reported difficulty with adjusting chlorinator. This was finally adjusted satisfactorily.

5 Oct 43

Overcast, slight rain. Reception good. Notified control tower of the presence of several aircraft - only two aircraft landed here - other aircraft continued to other fields probably because of overcast. Tried to get some tools from Stores - only succeeded in obtaining 1 hacksaw.

6 Oct 43

A few clouds but sun shining through. Calibration aircraft took off at 0915 on his course. Mechanics not busy were employed loosening earth from Operations building to tower. Calibration flights were in form of 25 mile & 40 mile circles around Station. LAC Batterfield, WM R172429 arrived from Scoudouc to install a modification in receiver which is supposed to enable us to keep our PRF at the same frequency as Louisburg. Mechanics were kept busy burning scraps of lumber, etc around operational building. Calibration aircraft and party forced to return to Scoudouc because of engine trouble in aircraft.
