March 5, 1943 to December 31, 1943

THE FOLLOWING IS A RESUME OF EVENTS DURING THE FORMATION OF NO 27 DETACHMENT, DURING THE PERIOD 5TH MARCH TO 30TH JUNE, 1943.

The first personnel of this Detachment to arrive on Marble Island landed on March 5th, 1943, the party was made up of Flying Officer GF Bates, 6 Security Guards, 6 Members of the RDF Installation Party, 4 Airmen on Temporary Duty from No. 2 Maintenance Unit and 3 volunteer helpers from Alliford Bay. They brought with them a load of equipment on a barge towed by the MV Burnaby M, this was beached at the South Landing at low tide, and with hours of tedious toil equipment was finally landed, all work having to be done by man power difficulties were experienced in the landing of cases whose gross weight was as much as 3500 pounds. Equipment was taken up to the Oprations Building during the course of the next two days, and installation commenced.

Pilot Officer Yates was posted to the Detachment to assume the duties of Technical Officer. There were no chairs, tables or desks at the Detachment and the only equipment to work on, eat in the mess or relax on after working hours was that left behind by the Marwell Construction Company; mostly made of rough lumber cut on this Island.

Food supplies and mail were very much delayed in arriving and on May 10th, 1943, Flying Officer Bates, the Officer Commanding, AC2 Alexander the Motorboat Crewman and Corporal Bethel of the Coast Watch embarked in the station dinghy (M.550) with the Coast Watch outboard and made a trip to Alliford Bay, bringing back three sacks of mail, 50 pounds of meat and a clerk to assume the Orderly Room duties.

After six weeks Oil, Coal, Beds and Blankets as well as an old Logging Donkey engine were brought in on a log raft, and with the aid of two civilian personnel still on the Island these were unloaded and immediately put to use.

All communications depended upon the Coast Watch Unit until the arrival of an AT3 Transmitter, telephones, wireless equipment and remote lines along with a telephone installation crew which immediately put all equipment in working order for use on this Island.

Group Captain Gordon of No 4 Group Headquarters with Squadron Leader Dumbrill visited the Detachment on an inspection trip and authorized the construction of board walks and stairways between huts of the detachment and the operations building. Previous to that time all were forced to make use of improvised trails and rope guards in order to scale the cliffs to the top of the Island and to the operations building.

The Educational Officer P/O Wiseman from Alliford Bay made a visit to the island, carried out interviews with a number of the personnel and advised as to courses that could be had, in which many were very interested.

On the 7th of June, the Detachment became Operational and the forwarding of plots to the Filter Room at Prince Rupert was commenced.

The Dentist, Lieutenant Foster from Alliford Bay, and Alliford Bay's Station Defence Officer visited the Island, they both accomplished a great deal in their stay which was longer than expected due to the fact that there was no boat. Flying Officer Jones advised on the construction of gun-pits, and other defence projects to be undertaken and on his departure work was started immediately.

Mr. Yates was posted to a course at No 3 Wireless School and P/O Clarke was posted from WAC to assume the duties of Technical Officer.

An ASV Beacon was brought out by Flying Officer Campbell of Western Air Command and with his installation crew of one sergeant and an LAC commenced installation on June 28th.

Attempted to signal the party of four airmen now overdue from a camping trip to the main island. No acknowledgment was received.

.

3 Sep 43

Two members of the camping party returned, rowing the boat. They reported that the boat had been swamped in landing on the main island, resulting in the loss of some equipment including three rifles, and food, and that the other two members had remained on the other island not daring to make the trip in the open boat. A message was dispatched to Alliford Bay requesting that the Reel Fisher make a trip to assist in the rescue of the two airmen remaining on the main island. The Reel Fisher arrived at 1630 hours and the two men were picked up from the Beach. Unloading of the supply boat was postponed until the following morning due to rough landing conditions.

Truck jumped track and took off through the air at steepest part above camp site. Twenty ties were broken, two sections of plank walk torn out and a heavy log flying through the air struck corner of barrack building smashing hole near corner of one end. Another hit same building on opposite corner, causing slight cracking of boards and breaking window. Truck frame was slightly battered but will be easily repaired. Return of RDF defectives strewn all over the ground due to smashing of crate but all parts were collected although damaged further in some cases. Ranges of CHl operations have been good since quarterly overhaul. Range of 135 miles received this day.

10 Oct 43

Weather fairer but seas only slightly less heavy and landing conditions still bad. Calibration flight again postponed. Breakdown in main CHL equipment at approximately 2300 hrs and station off air for three hours. Repairs also fixed slight curvature of trace which had been giving a little trouble and cause of which had been very difficult to determine.

11 Oct 43

Weather fine and MV Reel Fisher arrived at approximately 1330 hrs with a large deck load of lumber and the balance of the rations it had been impossible to unload on previous trip. A detachment of six #9 CMU personnel in charge of F/Sgt Graham arrived to check and repair the power distribution wiring. A plane arrived for the first calibration flight which proved unsuccessful. the plane was unable to carry out the requests of Calibration Officer, F/O Harland, as to altitude or range. R/T communications with the plane were good but communications with Group filter room were entirely disrupted by atmospheric conditions.

12 Oct 43

Routine normal. Weather poor. Calibration flight cancelled.

13 Oct 43

Wind strong. MV Reel Fisher arrived at 1200 hrs on return trip to Alliford Bay. Use of second high frequency channel with Group used and found very successful until 1930 hrs when contact was lost due to atmospheric conditions. Contact not re-established until 2230 hrs, on former channel.

14 Oct 43

Exceptionally high seas caused by south wind swept landing beaches a great distance above high water mark. Thirteen cases of empty "coke" bottles were lost and empty oil drums scattered. Luckily none was lost. Considerable difficulty was experienced in moving equipment out of reach of raging sea due to violence of wind, which was judged to be well over the fifty mile mark through the south landing gorge. Water was washing right up to the bottom of the incline railroad. The aerial array was pretty well protected from the force of the wind by its location but nevertheless a considerable amount of drift and straining of thyratron were experienced. This was not felt sufficient, however, to warrant locking the array. The site seems very good insofar as protection from wind is concerned and very likely very little time off the air should be experienced due to fall gales.

15 Oct 43

Seas very heavy and landing impossible. MV Reel Fisher notified as it had intended to make the trip from Alliford Bay. Use of alternate frequency on R/T communications with filter seems to be big improvement as one frequency apparently works better by day and the other at night. It is therefore hoped that there will be less time of broken communications. An inspection of barracks was held by the Officer Commanding.

16 Oct 43

Seas moderating but too heavy for landing and MV Reel Fisher notified accordingly. Calibration still tied up due to bad weather and unserviceable aircraft.

17 Oct 43

Beacon triggering oscillator unserviceable for short time. After checking it was found serviceable. Need is felt for a good overhauling. Breakdown in governor of one diesel motor renders it unserviceable until replacement of broken parts can be obtained. MV Reel Fisher arrived at 1730 hrs and passengers and meat were unloaded. Balance of rations were left until the next morning as landing was difficult, although both landings were attempted. F/L Nesbitt and a party of eight airmen from #9 CMU arrived to complete installation of evaporators.

18 Oct 43

MV Reel Fisher returned at 0900 hours and completed unloading before proceeding on south run to coast watch units. No 9 CMU detachment busy. Building for houseing evaporators commenced and new poles erected for power lines in improvement of power installation. Non-arrival of equipment needed is to some extent holding up the work of this crew. Calibration flights have been cancelled for a full week due to unserviceability of planes assigned for this duty at Annette Island.

19 Oct 43

Normal operations. Work continuing on all No 9 CMU projects in spite of rain.

20 Oct 43

Work continuing and operations normal. MV Reel Fisher arrived at 1200 hrs on return trip to Alliford Bay. F/L Nesbitt left after leaving instructions with NCO i/c No 9 CMU Detachment regarding the completion of evaporator installation. Landing and embarking conditions becoming far more difficult due to temperature of air and water and the necessity of wading into water up to the waist to beach or launch the dinghy. This also becoming more hazardous due to rougher seas at this season of the year.

21 Oct 43

Heavy rain but clearing somewhat towards midday. A good track of meandering characteristics of 178 miles in length obtained and congratulations received from Group on good work. Cross pieces of wood nailed on sloping pieces of plank walk to prevent slipping. These walks are dangerous when wet and a number of bad falls have occurred to personnel, without, however, causing any serious injuries.

22 Oct 43

Routine normal. Barrack inspection by Officer Commanding. Some very good tracks of aircraft picked up in the afternoon.

23 Oct 43

Cold bright day. Neither supply vessel nor calibration aircraft arrived although perfect flying weather and a calm sea for landing supplies were available. It is regrettable as weather will likely never be so favourable for a very long time. Beacon unserviceable at 1515 hrs and reported off air. Serviceable at 1645 after replacing spark gap.

24 Oct 43

Clear sky, smooth sea, and cold. Calibration flight again cancelled due to unserviceable aircraft. Operations fairly active as weather good and more aircraft flying. At 1550 hrs a Venture aircraft contacted this station on our frequency and asked for instructions. It was immediately thought that it must be the cancelled calibration flight and instructions were given to climb to 14300 ft and to fly course of 220º from 0 to 150 miles. Were advised that 10,000 feet was aircraft ceiling as no oxygen was carried. Changed instructions to fly course of 335º to 50 miles then to fly circle of 50 mile radius around station. Twice requested position from aircraft, once over Seal Inlet, and once over Naden Lake. Requested and got aircraft number - 2195. After second position, pilot, confused by our instructions, informed us he was here to investigate bogus track, not to calibrate. Informed pilot at 1620 hrs postions, direction and speed of bogus track as last seen at 1405 hrs. In view of time lapse pilot decided to return to base. Sent message to Group requesting purpose of flight, so that in future incidents, this unit would be prepared.

25 Oct 43

Clear, bright cloudless sky. Received request from Group for advice of contact with aircraft of previous day. R/T communications with filter poor and CW used to pass plots. No 9 CMU detachments proceeding favourably with construction of tank and building for evaporators and maintenance of power installation. Advised by Alliford Bay that MV Reel Fisher unable to make trip to Marble as skipper is ill and replacement being sent for him. Loss of perfect landing weather will be regretted as heavy equipment left by Construction Company, to be sent out to No 9 CMU Vancouver, can be shipped only under favourable landing conditions.

26 Oct 43

Wet and cloudy. MV Reel Fisher arrived at 1430 hrs with mail and freight and F/L Whiting, W&B Officer, and F/L Gilbert, the Padre from Alliford Bay, aboard. F/L Whiting made a tour of inspection of buildings and paid special attention to installation of evaporators. F/L Gilbert held a short service at 2000 hrs in the Rec Hall which was well attended.

27 Oct 43

MV Reel Fisher departed for Alliford Bay at 1000 hrs with F/L Whiting and F/L Gilbert. Weather very wet but seas still calm. Operations very quiet.

28 Oct 43

Still heavy rain and mist. Work continuing favourably on No 9 CMU projects. Operators obtained track of 193 miles, length at maximum range of 140 miles.

29 Oct 43

Cold variable weather. All RDF equipment, including beacon, off air from 0900 hrs to 1850 hrs, as power line and transformers were being changed over to new set of poles by the No 9 CMU detachment in their maintenance of power installations. Trouble being experienced with incline railway car as wheels jump track quite frequently since accident of Oct 9th. End of period for which rations have been supplied. Due to short shipment received and amount of meat received spoiled on arrival it will be necessary to use emergency rations for meat, jam, and sugar. Test to be made of F/M communciations at 1300 hrs but due to power maintenance were unable to use transmitter. Incoming signals were loud and clear. Test postponed until following day at 1300 hrs.

30 Oct 43

Very wet. RDF equipment again off air from 0900 hrs to 2000 hrs for maintenance on power transmission line, which is taking longer than was estimated. Test of F/M communications again postponed 24 hrs.

31 Oct 43

Very strong south-east gale. Estimated speed 50 mph. RDF equipment off air from 1030 to 1800 hrs for completion of transmission line maintenance. Evaporators 85% completed and motors were run, distilling considerable water. Water appeared to be very pure and of very clear, good colour, but tasted very flat. MV Reel Fisher arrived at 1630 hrs and landed passengers, some of the meat rations and mail, none of which arrived on shore dry as the dinghy was invariably swamped by breakers on landing. Further landings were postponed until the next day due to the hazardous conditions. Test of F/M communications again postponed.

Station Strength: 2 Officers, 77 Other Ranks.

(GD Clarke) P/O,
OC No 27 Detachment, RCAF,
Marble Island, BC.

1 Nov 43

Intermittent sunshine and rain, with moderate wind and heavy seas. MV Reel Fisher arrived for the postponed landing of supplies from yesterday, but conditions were not better and was again forced to postpone landing operations. F/M communications were tested with Alliford Bay. Reception was very good both ways although, a certain amount of noise was experienced at this end. Power was shut off for the complete camp site from 1230 hrs until 1840 hrs as work commenced on the change over of power lines and transformers to new poles.

2 Nov 43

Calm seas permitted the arrival of the Reel Fisher at 1000 hrs, supplies were landed and the vessel continued on a tour of Northern Coast Watch Stations. Power was shut off on the camp site until 2015 hrs to permit further maintenance on the transmission lines.

3 Nov 43

Seas again stormy with frequent showers and strong wind. Power was shut off on the camp site until 1515 hrs. Conducted several conversations with Alliford Bay through F/M equipment, transmission was fairly noisy.

4 Nov 43

Routine normal. Projects undertaken by No 9 CMU very near completion. Seas still very stormy.

5 Nov 43

Wet and stormy all day. The Officer Commanding conducted the weekly barrack inspection. The day was declared Marble Island's Fifth Victory Loan Day and the OC interviewed personnel of the Detachment with the object of furthering the sales of Victory Bonds. The results were rather disappointing as most of the Airmen claimed that obligations at their homes prevented them from assigning pay towards Bonds. A very good track of 205 miles length was picked up with a maximum range of 144 miles during the night.

6 Nov 43

Still wet and cold with rather a quiet routine. Final Victory Loan Sales amounted to $1250.00.

7 Nov 43

Still stormy with strong south winds. No 9 CMU completed their projects. Routine normal.

8 Nov 43

Strong south wind continuing with heavy seas. North landing, on lee side of the Island was fairly good and MV Reel Fisher arrived at 1400 hrs on the return trip to Alliford Bay after being storm bound up the coast for four days. F/O Harland returned to Vancouver and attempts of calibrating the Detachment were postponed until more favourable conditions are in existence. Two Detachments of No 9 CMU returned to Alliford Bay after completion of installation of evaporators and power transmission line maintenance. No 9 CMU refrigerator mechanic went to Alliford Bay with the motor from the Emergency Refrigerator to affect repairs. Range of over 140 miles was received in operations.

9 Nov 43

Operations normal, fair range of over one hundred miles received in the morning. Detachment without refrigeration due to breakage of V-drive belt on motor. Meat received in poor condition likely to spoil very quickly.

10 Nov 43

Routine normal. Range of over 140 miles received on operations.

11 Nov 43

MV Reel Fisher arrived at 1500 hrs with P/O Goldenberg who has been posted to this Detachment as a supernumerary. Sgt Metcalfe and an AC arrived from No 2 Maintenance Unit to check on operation of the Beacon. Sgt McKenzie and an AC arrived to check the Station Inventory. Three RDF Mechanics arrived from Alliford Bay, for a weeks temporary exchange duty on ground equipment, and three of the Mechanics of this Detachment are to proceed to Alliford Bay for experience with Air Equipment. Due to transportation difficulties Alliford Bay was unable to supply the required rations and it may be necessary to make partial use of Emergency Rations.

12 Nov 43

Checking of the Detachment's Inventory was commenced. P/O Goldenberg inspected the Barracks and Buildings. A track of 212 miles, and a track of 150 miles were received. A visiting party of Officers and a YMCA representative, who left Alliford on the Puffin with the hope of contacting the MV Reel Fisher at Canoe Pass for transportation to this Detachment, were forced to spend the night in the RCAF Cabin.

13 Nov 43

Beacon was shut down for maintenance by Sgt Metcalfe of No 2 Maintenance Unit at 0900 hrs and remained off until 1600 hrs. Several small replacements were made. The Reel Fisher arrived at Canoe Pass to pick up the party of stranded Officers, but it was too late to make the trip to Marble Island, and the party was forced to spend another night in the Cabin.

14 Nov 43

MV Reel Fisher arrived with the party from Canoe Pass, bringing S/L Burrage (Medical) and a Marine Officer, both from WAC. The YMCA representative, Mr Livingstone arrived with the party. They remained on shore while the vessel loaded outgoing equipment and departed.

15 Nov 43

At 0500 hours in the morning a large section of earth, rock and several trees, loosened by the recent heavy rains, crashed down from the cliff and fell on the boat shed, completely smashing the shed as well as its contents. Both of the Station Dinghies, the M.550 and M.457 were completely demolished. The outboard motor, oars, life preservers, and other equipment stored in the shed was buried under the debris. Command was notified by signal and F/L Newman the Adjutant at RCAF Stn. Alliford Bay by the F/M phone. The latter stated that he would try to furnish an investigating officer on the next boat. Torrential rains continued all day and all outdoor fatigues were cancelled. One good track of over 130 miles range was picked up.

16 Nov 43

At 0730 hours a portion of the cliff above the Eastern end of the Administration Building fell starting a small land slide. The new 5000 gallon water tank, used in conjunction with the evaporators, was moved off it's base by the slide, and came down the slope into the side of the Admin. Building, bulging in the wall of the Officer's Commanding bedroom. It was considered very lucky that the wall and roof had not given way, and prevented the further advancing of the huge tank, serious consequences may have occurred as the bed was directly in it's path and right against the wall. Considerable anxiety is felt throughout the Detachment as buildings are erected very near the base of the cliff and occurrences such as these may cause fatalities. It is believed that these landslides have been caused by the very heavy rainfall of the past two days. At 1550 hours after two fuses had blown at the Power House due to Thryratrons bucking a gale, it was decided to lock the aerials but operations were again resumed in a couple of hours as the gale receded.

17 Nov 43

Rain has ceased and the weather is fairly clear. Operations normal. Full advantage of the good weather was used in cutting wood for fuel.

18 Nov 43

MV Reel Fisher arrived with F/O Moncton, F/O Williams, and P/O Archer from Alliford Bay Station, who are to hold court of inquiry into accidents on Nov 15th and 16th as well as investigate the loss of Fuel Oil on Oct. 2nd. Court of Inquiry convened at 1930 hours.

19 Nov 43

Weather again wet after a respite of two days. The Officer Commanding inspected the Barracks and Buildings of the Detachment at 1000 hours. Court of Inquiry convened at 1330 hours and were completed at 1700 hours.

20 Nov 43

Weather very stormy. Routine normal.

21 Nov 43

Weather still very poor. Normal routine continued.

22 Nov 43

Weather moderating.Normal routine and operations.

23 Nov 43

Contact made with the Supply vessel at 1700 hours, and it was decided to await the morrow with hopes of still calmer surf conditions, and perhaps easier landing conditions. Normal routine.

24 Nov 43

MV Reel Fisher arrived at 1000 hours. South landing was very fair, and as a result all equipment on board, all departing personnel and outgoing shipments of equipment were safely unloaded and loaded and the boat departed at 1300 hours. Rain started falling heavily by nightfall. P/O Goldenber is in charge of the Detachment as P/O Clarke proceed to Alliford Bay with members of the Court of Inquiry.

25 Nov 43

Routine and Operations normal.

26 Nov 43

R/T communications have been very poor all day. Weather only fair. Received a track of 7 aircraft and one of 3 aircraft at the same time, this is the greatest number of aircraft to be picked up by the Detachment at any one time. Also received one good track of over 200 miles in length.

27 Nov 43

MV Reel Fisher arrived at 1400 hours, bringing F/L Michener of No 3 Repair Depot, Vancouver, to select a site for IFF Interrogator. P/O Clarke returned from Alliford Bay. The landing boat only made two successful trips and was smashed against the rocks. Landing operations were discontinued, leaving all rations, mail, equipment and two airmen on the Fisher to await calmer weather and surf.

28 Nov 43

Landing still impossible and the Reel Fisher was forced to remain at Canoe Pass. A site was selected for the new IFF Interrogator Aerial installation. Normal routine and operations continued.

29 Nov 43

Weather much fairer. Supply boat arrived shortly after lunch, mail, meat and cigarettes were the only articles unloaded, and further unloading was postponed. The vessel proceeded on the Coast Watch Run.

30 Nov 43

Reel Fisher arrived at 0930 hours, on the return trip from Coast Watch Units, and unloaded the remainder of the equipment and supplies on board. This unloading took most of the day and the only articles left on boat were the Beer and one case of Radio Equipment, as the boat was in a rush to catch the falling tide. F/L Michener departed for Alliford Bay. Difficulty being experienced with R/T communications and F/M equipment proving to be a great aid in restoring communications with the Rupert Filter Room.

1 Dec 43

MV Reel Fisher arrived at 1600 hours and was advised that due to heavy rain and stormy sea landing would be impossible. Routine normal throughout the day.

2 Dec 43

It is again impossible for the supply vessel to land due to prevailing weather conditions and it is awaiting further instructions at Canoe Pass. Heavy hail storm, with lightning and thunder was experienced in the late afternoon, and both the F/M and AT.3 transmitters were shut down due to the close proximity of the storm. This was only for a short period of not more than twenty minutes.

3 Dec 43

Heavy gale blowing with scattered showers and hail throughout the day. Gantry was locked from 0015 hours to 0900 hours. MV Reel Fisher was again advised of impossible landing conditions and returned to Canoe Pass. Power line trouble experienced at 1640 hours, due to an open circuit breaker, power was restored at 1730 hours.

4 Dec 43

Routine normal. MV Reel Fisher arrived at 1530 hours disembarking personnel and unloading mail. Due to rough landing conditions all other equipment was left on board and the vessel continued on the North Coast Watch run. At 2120 hours a signal was received from the MV that she had run aground and would try to get off in the morning tide.

5 Dec 43

Drizzle, fog and stormy seas throughout the day. Conditions prevented Alliford Bay from sending an aircraft to the stricken vessels aid. Requests for weather reports were received throughout the afternoon but conditions improved only slightly, a signal stating that conditions surrounding the fate of the vessel were serious and that it requested immediately advice of the arrival of a naval vessel was received at 1610 hours.

6 Dec 43

At 0615 hours the Detachments Recreation Hall was discovered on fire, flames spread very quickly and by the time station personnel had been aroused and the hose connected for use, the building was ablaze. The roof collapsed and one wall fell in before the flames could be extinguished. The fire was eventually under control at 0720 hours and by 0815 was completely extinguished. The building and all contents were completely destroyed by the fire, also damaged were the adjacent power lines and the power transformer. The rapidity with which the fire was brought under control with existing equipment is complementary to the firefighters, and it is only their admirable efficiency in handling the fire apparatus that prevented the spread of the conflagration. During the fire it was necessary to turn off the power to the camp site, as a result of which communications with No 4 Group Filter Room were disrupted. Western Air Command and RCAF Station Alliford Bay were immediately notified by signal, and the site of the fire was proclaimed out of bounds to all personnel pending an investigation. The MV Cape Canso passed this Island in the early afternoon, on her way up the coast to render aid to the distressed MV Reel Fisher.

7 Dec 43

Immense seas and a stormy surf arose overnight, breakers were washing up to within a few feet of the Administration Building, and the site of the recently destroyed boathouse was frequently inundated. RDF operations were very busy for this location, one track was obtained of over two hundred miles. The MV Reel Fisher enroute to Alliford contacted this Detachment, with the hope of landing the balance of the supplies, but, due to rough conditions proceeded on her way without picking up any equipment or passengers. In the late afternoon distress calls were picked up from the Tug Inverness, stating that she was in trouble off the Lucy Island Lighthouse, and requesting aid from the Coast Guard from Prince Rupert or Ketchikan, Alaska. This message was passed to the Filter Room, and later in the evening congratulations were extended by them to us for our participation.

8 Dec 43

Routine normal. Operations were fairly quiet throughout the day.

9 Dec 43

One track of 211 miles was had in operations, range was about 130 miles. Routine normal.

10 Dec 43

The Officer Commanding made an inspection of all barracks and the camp site. The MV Cape Canso pased enroute to Taseo Harbur to pick up the Coast Watch Unit and to return to Canoe Pass to await officers for a court of Inquiry re the Canteen Fire.

11 Dec 43

Weather very calm. MV Cape Canso arrived at 1645 hours bringing supplies, and Flying Officer Monckton with Flight Lieutenant Newman to conduct a court of inquiry into the Recreation Hall fire. WO2 Smith and a party arrived to install a switchboard and a system of telephones for the Detachment. F/S Amendola arrived to instal a new receiver for the F/M equipment and also to match the transmitter. Unloading of the boat was only partially completed.

12 Dec 43

Supply boat returned at 0930 hrs to unload the remainder of supplies and continued on the North Coast Watch run. WO2 Smith and party installing new telephone lines, and new telephone switchboard. Court of Inquiry convened at 1430 hrs, adjourned at 1730 hrs. Operations normal.

13 Dec 43

Court of Inquiry continued and another court was held into non-public funds lost due to the fire.

14 Dec 43

Telephone installations completed. Court of Inquiry held into the loss of rifles and outboard motor parts, which occurred on September 2nd in Gudal Bay. Operations normal.

15 Dec 43

Trade Tests conducted in the afternoon for all RDF personnel.

16 Dec 43

Operations normal.

17 Dec 43

Fuel tank at the power house has run dry, and oil had to be loaded into barrels from the emergency supply held down at the beach to be taken up via the incline railway. Day was very stormy and the party of Officers was forced to continue their waiting for transportation to return to Alliford Bay.

18 Dec 43

Landing conditions still impossible. Operations normal.

19 Dec 43

MV Cape Canso arrived in the morning and outgoing personnel embarked to be transported to Canoe Pass, to be ferried from there to Alliford Bay by a Crash Boat and an Aircraft. Demolition of the burned Rec Hall commenced in preparation of the anticipated arrival of a new pre-fabricated building. Trade Tests were conducted for RDF Mechanics in practical work.

20 Dec 43

An electric motor driving the compressor for the Walk-In refrigerator in the Mess Hall has burned out the armature windings, and emergency refrigerator was resorted to.

21 Dec 43

Demolition of the Rec Hall continued. MV Cape Canso arrived during the early afternoon, only two landings were made and in both attempts the dinghies were upset, the contents dumped into the water, only a few vegetables were lost. Due to the surf conditions further attempts to land more supplies were abandoned. Considerable anxiety was felt for the Christmas turkeys, which were still left onboard the vessel.

22 Dec 43

Supply boat returned at 1000 hrs and all supplies with the exception of 2 bags of vegetables were landed. Operations active all day and several aircraft were detected.

23 Dec 43

Routine and operations normal.

24 Dec 43

Routine and operations normal.

25 Dec 43

A re-arrangement of meal hours was made so as to facilitate the Detachments celebration of a Christmas dinner. A social evening was held in the Mess Hall at 2000 hrs, with Bingo and Quiz contests for prizes. Refreshments were served.

26 Dec 43

An exceptionally strong gale with wind velocity estimated at approximately 80 miles per hour arose during the night. At 0530 hrs a number of very large trees were uprooted, falling across power and telephone lines to the Operations building, across line leading to the F/M equipment, across the inclined railway and the plank walk, causing considerable damage. Due to the damage the RDF equipment and the F/M circuit were put out of operation. As soon as daylight permitted work was commenced in clearing the debris and repairing the lines with the inadequate means available at this Detachment. Power and telephone lines were spliced and restrung on poles, the line to operations was completed just after dark and the Beacon was immediately put into operation. When an attempt was made to commence operations, it was found that trouble had developed in the Thyratron.

27 Dec 43

Operations commenced at approximately 0230 hrs, after considerable difficulty had been experienced in effecting repairs to the Thyratron. Repairs were completed to the lines leading to the F/M equipment, clearing of debris from the inclined railway continued. All RDF equipment was forced to go off the air for a period of one hour and forty five minutes while F/M power lines were connected to the main circuit.

28 Dec 43

Work continuing on the clearing of debris from the inclined railway track. Operations normal.

29 Dec 43

Routine normal.

30 Dec 43

MV Cape Canso arrived at 1730 hours, only two landings were made. Some of the passengers and all the supplies were left on board, the vessel returning to Canoe Pass to await better landing conditions. Weather commenced to change after nightfall.

31 Dec 43

All RDF operations including the Beacon, ceased at 0330 hours as falling trees had again torn down power and telephone lines. At daylight work was immediately commenced in the repairing of lines and restringing them on poles. Several trees considered dangerous were felled to prevent future similar occurrences. Likelihood of a similar accident is very possible due to the many very tall trees adjacent to the power lines and the bad storms that prevail in this vicinity. MV Cape Canso was advised that landing conditions were poor.
