In June 1941, Gwyn Owen was in a radar class at Queen's University, Kingston, Ontario where he received his Cpl stripes. He shortly went overseas to Britain, India and Burma. He returned to Canada in June, 1945, and as a F/L was in charge of the Wing HQ at RCAF Station Alliford Bay, British Columbia. He found this an excellent place to be, but it didn't last long because he shortly beame isolated at Cape St. James (No 28 RD). The important mail was received once in ten days, but they had lovely sand beaches and inland the sight of snow-capped mountains provided a pleasant, peaceful atmosphere.
He considered the meals at No 28 RD wonderful as one airman who loved fishing supplied fresh halibut on a regular basis. Most days were bright and sunny but the odd mild rainy one made the climate enjoyable. The station began closing up in August 1945 and Guyn Owen subsequently became a civilian, after an illustrious radar career.
