44 RADIO UNIT - FOGO ISLAND, NEWFOUNDLAND
November 11, 1944 to November 21, 1944

11 Nov 44

Boat arrived - 26 RCAF personnel - sea very rough - impossible to unload. Sgt. Riddel asore with movies and mail.

12 Nov 44

Boat entered cove, unloaded personnel and cargo. Major Fetterolf of US Army ashore for hunting. Also Mr. Groves with 2 bird dogs (one decidely pregnant). Tentative assignment of shift duties. Meeting of senior NCO's - outlining general duties and camp organization.

13 Nov 44

Signing over of inventory. Station functioning completely with RCAF personnel. GR17 installed. Spare telephone line to Ops. Bldg used as AE on 157 KC.

14 Nov 44

Heavy fog preventing movement of boat from Twillingate harbour for loading and evacuation of US personnel. Preparation of official mail to HQ.

15 Nov 44

Wireless instructions re: joining point to point network received. Unable to comply since necessary correspondence had not arrived. Message sent to this effect. Also AT3 not yet unpacked. General meeting of personnel held in lounge. Situation explained in general and canteen organization discussed. Decision re. distribution of YMCA cigarettes. Censorship and security discussed. Uncrated AT3 and worked on same till early morning. Relays badly out of adjustment.

16 Nov 44

AT3 still unserviceable. Weather also unserviceable. Several messages from HQ demanding we comply with instructions not yet received. Worked all day on TX.

17 Nov 44

Mess out of flour and butter - sent message. Weather still preventing evacuation of Americans.

18 Nov 44

Official mail arrived via N'fld post. Still CSSI #3 required to interpret wireless instructions, not included. Weather continues bad.

19 Nov 44

Worked on AT3. Keying relay badly out of adjustment. Station rather chaotic, with uncertainty of American's departure, burden of extra personnel on kitchen staff and barrack facilities.

20 Nov 44

AT3 serviceable - AE loading well. Relay keying very well. Unable to contact Met. Necessity for shore to boat communications made W/T testing and tuning difficult. Borrowed bag of flour from local merchant.

21 Nov 44

Weather still holding up departure of US personnel. Crash boat arrived at Cornell. Power breakdown in the evening.
