5 RADIO DETACHMENT - QUEENSPORT, NOVA SCOTIA

No. 5 Detachment, RCAF QUEENSPORT, NS was formed under authority of Organization Order No. S.34-5-3 Reference No. H.W./5 dated 21 May, 1942, as an RDF Station.

The Detachment which had first been under RCAF Station, Sydney, NS for Accounting and Equipment was placed under RCAF Station, Dartmouth, NS as parent Unit on 28th August, 1942.

No. 5 Detachment is located on Tor Bay on the south shore of Nova Scotia about one and one half miles from the coast. Accomodations provided are the usual temporary quarters commonly used in the RCAF, the whole being enclosed by a six foot wire fence. The Operational Building is enclosed in a second compound, the fence being the concertina type.

First equipment arrived on the site on 9th August, 1942 under the guard of five Security Guards posted on temporary duty from RCAF Station, Sydney, NS. As no quarters were available personnel provided for themselves and meals were cooked on a stove out-of-doors until near the end of August. C-13082 Pilot Officer JAJ Mussleman (SR)(RDF) and installation party of four airmen arrived on the Station 18th August, 1942 and began the installation of Radio Equipment.

C-10546 Pilot Officer CH Jones (SR)(RDF) arrived on the Station on 26 August 1942 as Officer Commanding.

C-11877 Pilot Officer LR Glenn (SR)(ADM) arrived on the Station on 1 September, 1942 as Administrative officer.

C-10934 Pilot Officer PF Peter (SR)(RDF) arrivd on the Station on 14 September, 1942 as supernumerary Officer.

DRO Serial No. 1 was issued 30 September, 1942. The following personnel had arrived:

Three Officers - 2 RDF - 1 Administrative
1 NCO
10 Airmen posted and 12 Airmen (Security Guards) on temporary duty.
2 Airmen were SOS on posting during the month of September.

HEALTH

The health of all personnel at this Detachment was good except for one airman admitted to Mulgrave Military Hospital threatened with pneumonia and for a mild epidemic of dysentry.

Airmen's Barracks completed and occupied. At this date the Mess Hall was being used although only partly completed. Administration Building was still unoccupied.

NIL. Routine normal. Nothing of importance occurred on these days.

Administration Building completed. Officers' quarters and offices occupied.

9 Oct 42

Four GD's - 1 Cpl Telephone Operator and 1 AC2 Telephone Operator reported.

Fence around camp completed.
1 RDF Operator posted to No. 1 Detachment, Preston, NS
1 LAC Telephone Operator reported.

3 Scurity Guards on Temporary Duty recalled to Sydney.

Ten Security Guards previously on temporary duty from Sydney posted to Detachment.

Air Vice Marshal AAL Cuffe, AOC EAC and Group Captain Hobbs, Commanding Officer, RCAF Dartmouth visit the Station for purpose of inspection.

26 - 28 Oct 42

Routine normal. Nothing of importance occurred on these days.

29 Oct 42

Board of Officers for purpose of taking over buildings already completed. Board consisted of S/L CWE Miles, EAC (W&B) F/L JB Cook, Dartmouth (Med) P/O LR Glenn, Queensport, (ADM).

30 Oct 42

Routine normal. Nothing of importance occurred.

31 Oct 42

47 Airmen (All Security Guards on temporary duty have been posted here or recalled.)

Health:

The health of personnel at this Detachment has been exceptionally good. Two hospital cases sent to Mulgrave Military Hospital with mild colds, and one case of an airman suffering from mental depresion sent to RCAF Station Hospital Dartmouth.
