11 Jan 45

Overast, rain.

12 Jan 45

Clear in am, overcast in pm. Filter asked search be made for balloon over Victoria - some plots passed which might have been this. Balloon evidently suspected of being of Jap origin, since signal received this date from WAC states that a number of such balloons have been found in Washington and Oregon. Balloon later identified as being released by Army at MacCauly Point. 19 SFC student officers visited unit for familiarization.

14 Jan 45

Overcast. Daily Maintenance was completed at 1100 hrs. At 10.59 Sector asked for a search in the neighbourhood of Chiliwack - 3 plus a/c plotted at 11.03, - showing IFF. Sector later reported that one fighter, 133 Squadron, of four, had crashed at that point into the Fraser River. The remaining a/c were plotted until Sector brought them down at Abbotsford.

15 Jan 45

Bright and clear. Normal routine. F/L Clark visited #2 filter Detachment in pm.

16 Jan 45

Overcast. F/O Jones, C13512, reported on posting taking Command of Unit, vice F/L Scherk. The fact that this Unit is not yet equipped with IFF. Interrogator equipment does not appear to be fully understood by those concerned. In the case of the fighters from 133 Squadron, lost in the Fraser River near Chiliwack on the 14th of Jan., F/O Jones was questioned by S/L Moran, of the School of Fighter Control, as to whether Broad IFF had been seen on our equipment. Since Broad IFF was reported from some source, and No 8 Radio Unit at Sea Island is off the air for overhaul, the distress IFF must have been picked up by a ASV Beacon. Broad IFF can not be seen on the equipment in use at this Unit until IFF Interrogator equipment is installed.
