Cape Ray, NF

[Cape Ray, NF]

Cape Ray is the southwest extremity of Newfoundland. The Canadian Government built a lighthouse there in 1871. The present tower is the third to be built at this site. The first was struck by lightening and burnt in 1885, and the second was destroyed by fire in 1958. The present white concrete tower was built in 1960. The South West Coast Development Association operate a craft shop and museum from one of the former light keeper's dwellings. The area around the lighthouse is a Dorset Eskimo archaeological site. Take route 1 from Port aux Basques. Cape Ray is on route 408, about 5 kilometers from the highway.
