1. RCAF PROGRAM

a - Eastern Sites (Nos. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, and 9)

Main radar and communications have been in operational use for more than a year Permanent back-up height-finder and back-up search radar facilities will be installed as available.

b - Western Sites (Nos. 18, 35 and 36)

Holberg (C-18) is operating. Communications (except some final work on outside plant) are completed. Installation on height-finder is dependent on tower roof repairs.

Comox and Tofino (C-35 and C-36) will not have permanent main search radar (AN/FPS-502) available until the third quarter of 1955 but a temporary AN/CPS-5D radar, loaned by USAF, has been delivered to each site. Height-finders (AN/TPS-502) are scheduled for installation before the end of this year. Communications are scheduled for completion at both sites by 15 Nov 54, substantially completed except permanent outside plant at Tofino which will not be completed until Mar 55.

2. RADAR EXTENSION PLAN - Interior of Canada

a - USAF ADC

Sites C-10 (Ramore), C-14 (Pagwa), C-15 (Armstrong), C-16 (Sioux Lookout), C-17 (Beausejour), C-19 (Puntzi Mountain), C-20 (Baldy Hughes) and C-21 (Saskatoon Mountain).

All eight sites are in operation, with the exception of height-finders (AN/TPS-502) and back-up search radars (AN/FPS-502). Installation of the height-finders will follow completion of repairs to tower roofs which should be finished in Nov and Dec 54. Back-up search facilities are scheduled for installation early in 1955.

b - RCAF Manned

Sites R6 (Ste. Marie), R11 (Halifax), R33 (Moisie), R34 (Sydney)

All sites are engaged in limited operations. Main radars and communications are complete.

Ste. Marie - (R-6) - AN/CPS-6B third sail (early warning) modification installation scheduled for Jan 55. Back-up search radar (AN/FPS-502) is scheduled r delivery in Feb 55 and back-up height-finder (AN/TPS-502) is scheduled for Feb 55. Delivery and back-up height-finder (AN/TPS-502) installation should start in Dec 54.

Halifax - (R-11) - Third sail and back-up height-finder (AN/TPS-502) installation should be completed by 15 Dec 54. Back-up search facility (AN/FPS-502) is scheduled for delivery in Feb 55.

Moisie - (Clarke City) - (R-33) and Sydney - R-34) - Back-up search radars (AN/FPS-502) are scheduled for delivery in Jan and Feb 55. Height-finder (AN/TPS-502) are installed.

  1. RADAR EXTENSON PLAN - Newfoundland and Labrador Sites - (Nos.22 to 31 inclusive)

Repairs have been completed to main radar at N-29 (Saglek) and all ten stations are now operating. Main radars, height-finders (AN/TPS-502) and communications are installed and the low frequency radio installation program is essentially completed. Back-up search radar (AN/FPS-502) for N-30 (resolution Island) is scheduled to leave the factory in Nov 54 and equipments for the other five isolated units (N-26 St. Anthony, N-27 (Cartwright), N-28 (Hopedale), N-29 (Saglek) and N-31 Frobisher Bay) are scheduled for Dec 54. Antennas and pressurizing equipments were delivered to these sites this summer. On some sites the pressurizing gear has been installed. This showed as 20% under FPS-502 column on sites N-24 (Goose Bay) and N-29 (Saglek) on the bat chart (page 5) of last month’s report in error, since this column is only to show electronic installation.

Third sail (early warning) kits have been installed at N-23 (Stephenville) and N-24 (Goose Bay) and installation has started at N-22 (St. John’s).

4. REP TELECOMMUNICATION EQUIPMENT – STATUS - (Outstanding equipment only. All others delivered).

AN/CPS-6B - Completed except for some operating spares and a portion of depot spares. Third sail kit shipments to sites N-22 (St. John’s) and R-6 (Ste. Marie) will be completed in Nov and Dec respectively.

AN/TPS-502 - Completed except for depot spares due in Dec 54.

AN/FPS-502 - One unit in Nov 54, eight in Dec 54, eight in Jan 55 and last five in Feb 55.

AN/GPA-30 - Video Mapping Unit - Delivery forecast calls for five per month beginning first of Feb 55. First twelve are scheduled for Pinetree and remainder on 50/50 allocation between Canada and USA.

IFF - AS/295-UP antennas for AN/CPS-6B third sail and AN/FPS-502 IFF equipments; delivery to be completed from USAF sources by mid-Dec 54.

Recorders - Department of Defence Production (Canada) has processed requisition and expects to place an order with Sonotone Co. Ltd. By the end of Nov 54.

5. NEAC COMMUNICATIONS

Installation is continuing on the Newfoundland "ON" carrier system. Repeater equipment deliveries are progressing and nine diesel engines for power generators have been received. Delivery of the remaining 27 engines has been delayed due to the recent dock strike in England. It is not yet known how long the delay will be. The Gander (N-25) building extension will be ready for installation work on 21 Nov 54.

Studies are being undertaken relative to cancellation of the microwave program.
