Lt J.M. Mills
Lt Mills was selected due to the rather "unique" picture
of himself and his troops holding a costume party/dance in Belgium
shortly after capturing a building that was previously held by the
"Bosche".
The picture is unique because while its often not difficult to
find inspirational photographs of soldiers performing their duties
under harsh and difficult conditions, you rarely find pictures of
the troops taking time out to "develop morale".
Admittedly we know very little about Lt Mills. The picture above
shows him as a Private (upper left corner) when World War One
started. Another photograph a few years later shows him as a
Sergeant. By 1918 we know that he was a Lieutenant.
If anyone can provide more information on Lt Mills (or "The
Dance") please contact the
museum.
