1952 – The Early Days – Ed Landry

It is hard to remember a place that you didn't particularly care for, but I went to 2 Wing from 1 Wing (North Luffenham) in a Bristol. I am not certain of the dates. The place was a sea of mud back then and if you fell into the ditch coming from the wets then you had a hard time getting out of them. The barracks were heated with "Herman Nelson" heaters and they had crews going around just to keep them full. I seem to recall that I left there around November of 1953 and by the time I left everyone was talking about how great the boys at 2 Wing were getting along. I don't really remember all that much about the place - mainly because I just wanted to block it out of my mind. I was single then and did a year in North Luffenham and then a year at 2 Wing. I do remember that the WD's arrived in the summer of 1953 but the place was fairly well cleaned up by then. We often used to wonder if the runways would sink into the mud.
