423 AWF Sqadron, 2 (F) Wing, disbanded on this date. All establishments were cancelled.

30 Nov 62

Final plans have been promulgated for the de-activation of the CF-100 and F-86 squadrons.

601 Telecommunications Squadron – Plans have been completed for the move of 601 Telecom Squadron from 2 Wing to Metz. The unit will occupy buildings formerly occupies by 61 AC&W Squadron and the move will take place between 1 Jan 63 and 1 Mar 63.

International Negotiations – AFHQ has undertaken the task of arranging external negotiations with France to amend the Franco-Canadian Agreement to allow the RCAF to station CF-104 aircraft at Grostenquin.

Air Division’s Tenth Anniversary. A Ceremonial parade was held with a flypast.

30 Sep 62

The F-86 flying rate at all IDF Squadrons was reduced from 25 to 20 hours per month as a result of austerity measures. The technical personnel establishment of each squadron was reduced by 19 positions at the same time. Nine technical and operations positions were added to the establishment of 2 Wing to provide maintenance and to operate the RATCON installation.

The establishment of 109 Communications Flight at Grostenquin was reduced by four pilots and nine navigators. These positions, which were added in October 1961 as a result of an emergency augmentation, were no longer required.

The Track and Field Meet was held at 2 Wing and was won by 1 Wing, with 2 Wing a close second.

"Friends Day" held at 2 Wing.

Recreation – For the second year in a row, 2 Wing were the winners of the 1 Air Division Sports Achievement Trophy. This trophy is presented on a fiscal year basis to the unit in 1 Air Division that obtains the most points for sports competitions, organizing of recreation club and running of tournaments, and best competitor in inter-wing leagues.

The inter-unit voluntary trumpet and drum band competition was held at 2 Wing and was won again by the 2 Wing band.

22 May 62

2 (F) Wing runway closed because of CF-100, Handcuff Mike 2, under carriage collapsed on landing. The aircraft slid off the side of the runway. No injuries were sustained. 2 Wing aircraft were diverted to 3 Wing. Runway reopened at 1230Z.

20 May 62

Live diversion. Horseman Charlie was diverted live from a practice scramble to investigate an SOS in HE4225. The SOS was a USAF F-104 with a faulty parrot or a practice SIF squawk.

4 May 62

Madcap 24 landed at Ramstein after losing his radio compass and could not find 2 Wing. Yellowjack and 2 Wing ADC could give no assistance so he landed at the first place where he had positive contact.

3 May 62

Live diversion. Madcap Delta was diverted live from a practice Zulu scramble to investigate an SOS in FE1000. SOS was 2 USAF F-84s with a faulty parrot. Madcap Delta returned to base.

27 Apr 62

Exercise Senior Sentinel was called at 2 (F) Wing to test the alert reaction at the Wing, in conjunction with the AOC’s visit.

30 Mar 62

2 (F) Wing advised Salesman that their runway will be closed until at least 1100Z. Sandal Tango lead ran off the end of the runway and must be dug out of the swamp.

13 Mar 62

SOS. Sandal Alpha declared an emergency over Ramstein when the lead had a complete electrical failure. Recovery was made at 1109Z at Ramstein. Horseman Charlie reported a bright explosion 5 miles north of Sembach at approximately 35,000 to 40,000 feet. It appeared to be accompanied by smoke, some debris and cast a phosphorescent glow. After checking, all aircraft in the area were accounted for. After further investigation Logroll revealed that reports were received of the firing of rockets or similar equipment by a person unknown in the Sembach area. Nothing else developed on the matter.

7 Mar 62

SOS. Horseman Oscar 2 had a small explosion in his aircraft, but nothing resulted. A safe recovery was made at 1442Z at 2 Wing.

26 Feb 62

SOS. Sandal Tango Lead under Yellowjack control experienced severe engine vibration. The section was on exercise Scan Plan, so were immediately recovered at 2 Wing. Down safely at 0918Z.

22 Feb 62

SOS. Cashbox 5 declared an emergency with no transmitters. The radio failure was only temporary and a safe recovery was made at 2 Wing at 1922Z.

14 Feb 62

Madcap Foxtrot 2 had a flame out but made a successful relight and recovered at 2 Wing.

23 Jan 62

Mid air collision. Handcuff Mike Lead and Cashbox 7 had a mid air collision while flying formation. Handcuff Mike lead (CF-100) lost one elevator and had a double flame out. The port engine was restarted and a safe landing was made at 2 Wing. Cashbox 7 (F-86) had the starboard wing damaged but did not declare an emergency. He also carried out a safe landing at 2 Wing.

17 Jan 62

SOS Horseman 2 declared an emergency with hydraulic problems but landed safely at 2 Wing.
