A "Gala Night", sponsored by the Ladies Auxiliary of 2 (F) Wing was held this evening and proved to be a tremendous success. Personnel from all Wings journeyed in with their families to enjoy games of chance, merry-go-round, baking and clothing sale, hot dogs, hamburgs, etc. The grand prize of the evening, a 1955 Belair hard top convertible, was won by F/L Cuthill of 4 (F) Wing.

A/C CH Greenway, CPS, G/C A Walmsley, DAFS, W/C TH Spear, DPA, and S/L B Dale, DAFS3, all of AFHQ, visited the station today to discuss personnel and security administration.

As in Canada, RCAF Wings in Europe celebrated Air Force Day today and 2 Wing was no exception. A large crowd visited the exhibits in the hangar and enjoyed a boxing show in the Recreation Centre in the evening. The day was completed with dances in the individual Messes.

Mr. B Halford, Editor of Aircraft Magazine, Toronto, arrived on the station today to gather material on the operation of the F-86 for future publication in his magazine.

Exercise "Carte Blanche" commenced today. This operation is to test the defence of NATO forces in Europe. 421 (F) Squadron has been deployed to Belfort for defence purposes during this operation. All personnel have been issued with gas masks and male personnel are organized in flights to prevent any ground attacks from the enemy.

CO flew to Belfort today to see 421 Squadron and to check on how they were making out living in tents and eating out.

A/V/M JG Kerr, AOC TC, accompanied by G/C LH Randall, SPSO, Air Division visited 2 (F) Wing today. A/V/M JG Kerr is representing the CAS at Exercise "CARTE BLANCHE". Several attack warnings were sounded today but the enemy failed to break our defence.

A/V/M Campbell, General Weyland, USAF, and General Murten, FAF, arrived on the station and were met by the CO.

Fifteen reporters covering Exercise "Carte Blanche" arrived at 2 Wing today. They were briefed by the AOC, Air Div, A/V/M Campbell and conducted on a tour of the station by the CO. Exercise "Carte Blanche" was officially declared over at 2100 hours, and the station has been stood-down for three days.

Flying commenced at 0845 hours and F/O Adams had a mishap on the first section. While on final approach, he experienced a flame out and force landed ˝ miles off the end of the runway. Fortunately F/O Adams escaped uninjured although the aircraft was damaged. 2 Wing was visited by Mr. PY Davoud, Sales Manager, Orenda, who discussed the use of Orenda engines in the F-86, with the COpsO and CO. Today was the most tragic day for 2 (F) Wing since its inception. Two of her senior pilots, F/O Emile Noel and F/O Bruce Donald, both of 416 Squadron, collided while flying in close formation and were killed instantaneously. F/O George Kowarth had to force land as a result of the debris that entered the intake of his aircraft. F/L John Allingham was the only one able to make it back to base for landing. Flying times:

A fatal accident almost occurred when F/L Hogan’s aircraft developed a leak in the hydraulic control system, but he was able to regain partial control and land the aircraft safely. General Vanier, former Canadian Ambassador to France, and A/V/M H Godwin, new AOC, 1 Air Division, paid an informal visit to 2 (F) Wing today. 601 C&R Squadron instituted a new microwave circuit between Air Division and 4 (F) Wing. Headed by W/C CD Barnett, COpsO, representing the CO, a busload of athletes travelled to 3 (F) Wing to enter in the Air Division Track and Field Competition. Although not the team winner, some of 2 Wing’s athletes captured first prize in individual events. From all accounts, it was a well organized sporting event enjoyed by the athletes and spectators alike.

General Dupain and party of the French Air Force, paid a liaison visit to the station and was taken on a tour of the Wing by the CO. In the Command Finals of the National Truck Rodeo in Montreal, Cpl Norden of this Wing placed first, bringing the championship of the Air Force to 2 Wing.
