Non Zulu. Nil flying all squadrons. The CO accompanied by F/L English, Captain De Malglaive, plus the Town Council and local officers laid a wreath at the War Memorial to the memory of St. Avold residents who were victims of the war at 1100 hours. At 1115 hours the party visited the French cemetery to pay homage to French soldiers who died for France. Then at 1130 hours at the American Cemetery, the town council and local officers plus the CO and party paid homage to American soldiers who died for the liberation of France.

Cold but weather good all day. A big night flying programme was laid on and carried out. Sandal 29 (F/L Ross) landed at Chaumont because of compass and radio compass trouble. G/C Cross, Air Attache, arrived from Turkey at 1530 hours.

2 Wing’s popular football classic the “Mud Bowl” between the Officers and Airmen was won for the first time in years by the Officers. In basketball games with 1 Wing, the men won 84-40 and our girls lost 18-21.

In a giant Turkey Bingo held this date 50 turkeys and assorted prizes were son by a capacity crowd. A/C Gilchrist called to see the CO. A Traffic Tribunal was held in the morning and charge cases afternoon. Exercise Synthex/Guest on again on a reduced scale. Threat of fog delayed take-offs until 0810Z when the four interceptors and four of the eight raiders got airborne. No CF-100s were on the exercise. On Synthex, we flew 25 air offence sorties and 11 air defence. Our aerodrome was attacked several times by two ATAF aircraft.

Wing armament held a section party in the Rec Centre. Runway icy and frost covered, all flying washed out until 1130 then open flying washed in. Weather CAVU. One T-33 went to Prestwick to pick up a Mk 6 Sabre. A Mk 5 German Sabre was brought back by F/L Goeres who unfortunately had some navigation trouble and penetrated the East German border for a brief time before landing here safely.

The CO carried out an inspection of the station today. An intersection Volleyball meeting to organize the current league was held. 14 teams were represented. 423 Squadron pushed off for Decimomannu for a three week air firing tour. One of the T-33s flown by F/L Brickenden had a “B” category crash on landing at Decimomannu. All squadrons flying normal. F/L Greff, from Air Div, lost his tanks over an unpopulated area while on a low level trip.

Weather is down in almost all of Europe and UK. Met had some hope of flying weather but at 1100 hours things looked pretty dismal. Restricted flying washed in at 1230 hours. 430 Squadron had a compressor stall, re-lit and landed without further incident. Advantage of this little episode was taken to call an emergency. All sections responded to the alarm to everyone’s satisfaction. 423 Squadron began their Zulu standby tonight. This ends a month free of Sabre accidents. Flying time for 423 Squadron to, from and while at Decimomannu - 365.00/346.

The Station Entertainment Committee presented a live show in the station theatre. No traffic tribunal held today. No flying all day by Sabres because of bad weather and no alternate. At approx 1700 hours local two Sabres from 434 Squadron, 3 Wing declared an emergency due to lack of fuel and attempted to land here. Our GCA picked them up and brought them in on a GCA. The lead aircraft made a safe landing but his wingman landed about 3/4's of a mile short of the runway. The pilot was uninjured while the aircraft was an “A” crash.

Mrs. Pearkes toured the station with Mrs. Searle, Mrs. Godwin and Mrs. Currie and was introduced to various airwomen. Had tea in the airwomen’s lounge. Mr. Pearkes and party left the base for Metz. The National Defence College team toured the base and left for Metz. ME Section and 601 RR Squadron managed to squeeze an inter section fastball game in between showers. Other Belgians blew tires and seemed to have difficulty with our cross wind and wet runway conditions.
