A swimming course for instructions commenced at 1 Wing today. The weather is clear. All squadrons flying. Three Norwegian Air Force F-86K aircraft arrived during the afternoon on exercise Step Out. 421 Squadron is night flying. The CO, COpsO and OC 109 attended the funeral held for 15 victims of a mine disaster at Merelebach. The French Minister of Mines was on the station and departed for Paris via a French Dakota.

Brigadier KN Baird of the RCDC and Col Covey visited the station and inspected the dental facilities for both Service and civilians. Weather: clear. All squadrons flying. 421 Squadron and 423 Squadron are on Exercise Argus during the day. During the night flying, a CF-100 landed and went off the runway causing four CF-100s and one F-86 to be diverted to 4 Wing.

The Station fastball teams hosted 4 Wing. Playing on home ground, the Eagles lost their game 9 to 3 and the Eaglettes won their game 11 to 0. The 2 Wing Soccer team played the Belgium Air Force and won by a score of 10 to 4. The Station Basketball played in an invitation tournament at Sarre-Union. They were defeated in the preliminary round. Scattered high clouds. 109 Comm flight had an air evac to Landstuhl. No other flying.

An Archery meeting was held today in an effort to organize an Archery Club for 2 Wing. We had quite a few visitors today including A/V/M Cornblatt, AOC of MAC. S/L Drolet AFHQ/AMTS arrived to inspect POL handling equipment, methods and procedures. 70 children from Longeville les Metz arrived for a tour of the station. Weather: ceiling and visibility unlimited. All squadrons flying. 421 Squadron began Zulu at 1300 hours.

Ceiling and visibility unlimited. Three Argus aircraft arrived from Greenwood this morning. Service personnel and their dependents were allowed to tour one of the aircraft. It was a great day for the camera enthusiasts. The crews were given a tour of the station and a briefing by the CO and Air Div briefing team. Normal flying all squadrons.

In preparation for Canada Day, a dance was held at the Officers’ Mess. Madame Bourret and a friend from Limoges were special guests. A good dance and well attended. The model aircraft winners were given an extensive tour today. Proceeded to the US Military Cemetary in St. Avold and then visited the Maginot Line installations near Thionville. The AOC addressed the personnel at Air Division. At 2 Wing they saw a double Sabre scramble by 421 Squadron; attended a night briefing at 423Squadron; saw scramble and inspected CF-100. Another SE display for Nancy TV. Weather clear. 2 (F) Wing on Zulu today at 1200Z. Normal flying carried out. A practice scramble was carried out by 421 Squadron and 423 Squadron.

Weather: Scattered clouds good visibility. It is estimated we had approximately 10,000 and 12,000 visitors. The visitors were first directed to 601 Squadron where all the unclassified equipment was on display, well marked with signs and description in both French and German. They were then directed to the main tarmac to see: (i) Static display of ground handling equipment (ii) static display of representative ME equipment (iii) demonstration of the large crane at intervals (iv) a truck rodeo at intervals (v) demonstration of a model (radio controlled) aircraft (vi) static display of one of each aircraft based on the wing with ramps over the wings where practicable. Display included a Sabre in sections. (vii) Four Telecom trucks from 601 Squadron (viii) Three buses operated continuously from the tarmac (except during the air show) giving a tour of perimeter track. (ix) a 30 minute air show featuring various aircraft (x) Static displays and demonstrations in the Armament and Safety Equipment Sections. The CO spoke to the visitors in French at the conclusion of the air show. Refreshments were available at the tarmac area and in the Rec Centre. A softball game started at 1600 hours and the majority of the visitors left the tarmac area at the conclusion of the CO’s address, visiting the Rec Centre and watching the ball game with interest. It was felt that Friend’s Day had made an excellent contribution to local people relations.

The Air Division Little League baseball tournament was held at 2 Wing with 2 Wing winning the championship. A Track and Field meeting was held today. Weather: clear. CO’s parade this morning. Normal flying by all Squadrons. A RAF Swift landed and the starboard under carriage collapsed and the aircraft skidded off the runway. Minor damage occurred. During the night flying a T-33 from 4 (F) Wing using our runway went off the end of the runway with minor damage. 2 (F) Wing on Zulu today at 1200Z.

A/C McKell visited the basestation to discuss Benevolent Fund matters. In addition, G/C Murray the CO of 30 AMB landed here for a short visit. The Central Command Band from Ottawa gave a concert in the Municipal Park in St. Avold for our French neighbours. A good crowd turned out together with some of our PMQ residents. It was decided that the band put on a good concert which was enjoyed by everyone. An All Rank dance was held in the Rec Hall. Weather: clear. All squadrons flying.

Weather: cold front approaching station. Low ceiling poor visibility all morning. All jet aircraft were recalled because of very low clouds on the approach. One F-86 blew a tire on landing, another F-86 had a near miss with low fuel and missed approach. Another F-86 came in low and stuck the fence on approach damaging the aircraft. A CF=100 had to flame out to get stopped and a RAF Swift landed NORDO and flamed out on the runway because of engine trouble.

A Bingo was held tonight. Weather: Clear. Normal flying. 430 Squadron had a mid-air collision around Bitburg between F/O Noonan and F/O Bacon. F/O Noonan managed to bring his aircraft back to the station and F/O Bacon ejected successfully and landed outside of Luxembourg. He was picked up and returned to 2 (F) Wing by Dakota aircraft.

He visited 423 Squadron and 430 Squadron and witnessed a quick turn around at the 430 Squadron ORP. He was met by the AOC and CO. He then proceeded to Air Div and returned 1535 hours. He went to 3 Wing with the AOC via Dakota 911. A Comet aircraft arrived unexpectedly overnight.
