430 Squadron and 423 Squadron on normal flying, with some Norwegians flying with 430 Squadron. The weather stayed good all day. The weekly Bingo was held in the evening at the Rec. Centre.

Flying on Saturday with dull rainy weather, but the field was closed on Sunday due to high winds. Mixed basketball was played at 4 Wing. Our women won, but the men lost.

Fair weather, with Zulu aircraft off in the morning. Popa lead had his ailerons lock, and after fighting his aircraft down from 40,000 feet to 10,000 he was forced to bail out because of a cloud layer from two to ten thousand feet. Unfortunately his aircraft sought out the tiny village of Lichtenburg, and crashed into a house, killing a mother and child. The pilot landed, suffering back injuries, and was picked up quickly by ambulance. Men and equipment from Phalsburg rushed to Lichtenburg and provided valuable assistance in firefighting and clearing up the debris.
The 2 Wing Soccer team was victorious in its meeting with 4 Wing.

Low visibilities and lack of an alternate restricted flying all day.
The 4 (F) Wing basketball team, men and women, played at 2 (F) Wing. The 2 Wing men won, while the 4 Wing women defeated our girls.
The CO, FLO, and W/C Dodds from Air Division drove to Lichtenburg where the CO presented a cheque to Mr. Mees on behalf of all Air Division.
A/C Corbett, Deputy Surgeon General, toured the station and had dinner in the Mess.

The 2 Wing Eagles beat Frankfurt at hockey, while our Rifle Team won the invitational meet here at 2 Wing. 22 Jan 61 No flying. 23 Jan 61 The only flying this day was 423 Squadron night flying, plus 109 Comm Flight on normal skeds. 24 Jan 61 A lack of alternates caused flying to be curtailed. A group of 36 school children from St. Avold toured the Station. 109 Comm Flight flew an air evac to 3 Wing. 25 Jan 61 The CO had lunch at Casino de la Mine, Faulquemont, guest of the Mayor and the Consulars General of the District. Following lunch the group returned to 2 Wing and toured the Station. The station was put on stand-down at 1630 due to road conditions. 26 Jan 61 Another day of very poor weather. 27 Jan 61 One of our CF-100’s crashed shortly after take-off, killing both crew members.

109 Comm Flight left for Gibralter, and shortly after a Senior Sentinel was called. Twelve sections were scrambled in all. In the evening local civic and military officials were entertained at dinner and a hockey game where they saw Kitzbuhel defeat 2 Wing.

Early fog again cleared, with normal flying all day. At 2030Z the station was over-run with officers in mess kits, as an Exercise Quick Train emptied a mess dinner in record time. The exercise finished at 2335Z, after only two sections of CF-100 had been scrambled.

A group of Boy Scout Officials arrived for a two week course. The ATC band began its three day tour of local towns, presenting concerts.
