1958 - 421 Squadron Deploys to Decimomannu - Don Norrie


This photo depicts the Armourers sorting out and bagging the "brass & links".

During World War II, the fighters fired their rounds and ejected the spent casings and links into the atmosphere. When the F-86 fired it 0.50 calibre rounds, the "brass & links" were ejected into a holding bay below the guns. In this manner, when the aircraft returned from a gunnery mission, the bay was emptied and the contents were sorted for recycling by the Armourers.
