I was one of two RCAF photographers attached to 430 Squadron during this time. Our duty was to maintain the 16mm N-9 Cine Gun Cameras (2) installed in all #1 Air Division Sabre aircraft. As Photo Techs. (Trade # 131), we were trained in most other aspects of photography. As such; very often during "slack" time, we were requested by the Squadron OC or individual pilots for "hero" shots. Some were official, others were to be done on our own time, meaning the darkroom processing and printing was a private project when a fee was charged. The Squadron darkroom was not equipped for this, so the alternative was to do it at the Photo Hobby Shop, ... or if you had your own equipment at "home". I had my own camera gear, ... plus darkroom equipment set up in our tiny bathroom at our apartment in Morhange. It was a tedious "set up and take down" operation, ... but the extra few bucks helped on an LAC's pay. During this time with the Squadron, I'm quite sure I photographed every pilot in his flight gear by the aircraft or in the cockpit. Quite naturally, they wanted an "action photo" to send home to Mom and Dad. If time ever permits, I will try and locate those negatives, ... if they still exist, but I'm rather doubtful. They would be a great addition to the website. I'm sure many individual prints are out there somewhere in family albums.
