A Trip to Dabo

[A Trip to Dabo]

Dabo was a small village 18 km south of Phalsbourg.

Dabo, France.....wayyyyyy high up....where the last 80 "steps" are, indeed steps.....straight up to an old church converted into a restaurant. I remember they had a bearskin rug in one of the salon areas, and I was certain if I stepped on it the thing would roar and bite my leg off! We went on a day trip there - about 100 miles southeast of where we lived. I believe Dabo was close to the France/Germany border. We used to do these types of trips (several families) and have picnics along the way. French bread and cheese. Dabo is where they make crystal - mouth-blown, hand-cut, and I believe I still have a cut crystal ashtray that my mom bought there on this trip, packed away, like many other memories. This was a happy day, an easy-to-get-lost in day because there were lots of people and we all seemed to cherish the opportunities to play - even the adults - perhaps especially them.

  1. Stopping for a picnic along the way to Dabo - July 1956.
Typical of our picnics. My mom and the twins and my dad are in this picture. I am off somewhere on my own as I usually was - exploring the local area.

I remember we bought Orangina and Limonade because we wanted in out of the rain. We had already had our picnic but it had started to rain as it frequently does in France. My dad is standing on the right, my mom is standing in white in the middle and I am sitting with one of the twins in front of the dark-haired woman between them.
