410 Squadron Cougar

Jean-Guy Choquette

Yes, the 410 Squadron mascot was a cougar, originally in Canada and transported to North Luffenham (not on the Maggie). It was kept at the London zoo as there was no place for it on the station. They brought it out on a leash for parades from time to time. I am told that the second picture of the mascot, the one with the Sabres, was taken at North Luffenham during actual flying and a fly past. Note that the crown on the crests is the Kings crown (flat sides), the Windsor crown, that differs from the Queens crown (bulging sides), the Tudor crown. So both of these photos were processed before the present Queen acceded to the throne. I remember the Kings crown on our RCAF uniform buttons. I still have some.
