During the month of January, 109 KU carried out three VIP flights in 23:10 hours of actual flying time.

A TRN 6 TACAN was installed, replacing the TRN 17 which was operationally unacceptable.

238158 S/L H Thomas Chaplain (RC) 1 Wing Marville took one week of his annual leave this month to attend a Seminar at Bertchesgarden Germany. He was a guest of the USAFE Chaplains who had organized the week's study on Sacred music and the changes of the Liturgy. It is the RC Chaplain's intention to take advantage of this week to better acquaint himself so that the various changes laid down by his Church can be applied in the various services here at 1 Wing for the benefit of his congregation.

G/C Avant attended an official luncheon at 1 Air Division in honour of the MND. Mr Hellyer took SF162 from 1 Wing Air Terminal at 1500 hrs. (see photograph Appendix "C").

14 Feb 65

Round Robin exercises, previously restricted to Laon, are now being extended. Today, F/L Huddlestone to Indolstadt and next month, two aircraft per squadron vice one heretofore.

USAF Reserves arrived from Berline for a staff visit to 1 Wing.

15 Feb 65

New Canadian Flag raised at 1 Wing during a light snowfall. All Wing Personnel not on essential duties were present to honour the flag here, with the exception of a 50 man guard which participate in a like ceremony at Vimy Ridge War Memorial. (See photograph "Appendix "C").

Staff visit of Commander Aharan, from CFHQ, to discuss personnel problems.

Mrs Gaudet's Tean in Ladies Curling League scored perfect end. (See photograph in Appendix "C").

18 Feb 65

RON - Mr JS Hodgson, Assistant Deputy Minister of Finance for the Department of National Defence. Mr Hodgson is to take SF151 tomorrow for Canada.

Mess Dinner at the Officers Mess. Air Commodore Hale from SHAPE guest of honour. A/C Hale was the original Commanding Officer of 1 Wing.

22 Feb 65

Twenty five minute visit to 1 Wing by the Canadian High Commissioner, London. A quick station tour was provided while the aircraft of the Commissioner was turned around. (See photograph Appendix "C").

1-12 Feb 65

Two weeks annual leave were taken by the 1 Wing RC Chaplain, who is also the coach of the Arrows hockey team. He accompanied the 1 Wing hockey team to Grenoble, GAP, St Gervais in France and Gstaad in Switzerland where the team participated in exhibition games with local teams.

1-28 Feb 65

The OFTT began its programme of training flight simulator instructors from other NATO countries. The first of eleven groups arrived at the OFTT on the 15 Feb for a one week course. Our first course members were two German officers.

Course No 2 commenced on the 22 Feb and consisted of two Royal Netherland Air Force pilots. Both these courses ran smoothly and a great number of ideas were exchanged.

434 Squadron, 3 Wing utilized our trainer this month, along with 441, 439 and Air Div pilots.

109KU completed three VIP trips between the 16th and 20th February which carried the Canadian Ambassadors stationed in Rome, Paris, The Hague and Bonn, to Metz, Zweibrucken and back again.

During the month of February, 109KU carried out a total of seven VIP flights in 62:20 hours of actual flying time.

Security Training Section: total of 16 officers attended the Officers Basic Security Course.

Grocery Store - new gondola shelving was completed throughout most of the Grocery Store. This project although not exceptionally expensive, provided superior display facilities and certainly enhanced the attractiveness of the outlet. In addition, new cash registers were purchased and a fourth checkout was built to provide speedier service. Plans were initiated to construct an addition to the rear of the store for much needed storage space.

During the month of March, 109KU carried out 14 VIP flights in 102:55 hours of actual flying time.

The following OFTT Instructor courses commenced during the month of March: Course 3 - IMAR with two Belgium pilots. Course 4 - with two Italian AF pilots. Course 5 - with two German pilots. Course 6 - 22 Mar - with two Italian pilots. Course 7 - with one Belgium and one RNethAF pilot.

The OFTT also performed its regular task of emergency procedures training for pilots of 441, 439 and Air Division.

OFTT Instructor course 8 and 9 were completed this month and we could see the end drawing near.

Course 8 OFTT brought us two more German pilots, Captain Klaus Schlimper from Wittmindhave AB, and Captain Seigy Schollhorn from Lechfeld, AB.

Course 9 OFTT brought us our Scandinavian allies, one Norwegian and one Dane. Capt Joergensen from Aalborg, Denmark and Capt Pederson from Bodo Norway.

Month of May 1965

1-27 May 65

Exercise Blacktop - the flying operations of 1 Wing operated from the USAF base of Etain, Meuse, while the runway was being resurfaced. MSE with an augmentation of only three buses (no extra men) transported most of the CHE for the aircraft, all of the AMU traffic (personnel and material) and also ran the crews back and forth between the aircraft and the Wing. 109KU also ferried aircraft and equipment to Etain AFB. The 1 Wing taxiway was used for limited T-33 operations during the exercise.

The revitalized Soccer Club won the Air Division Soccer Championship by winning a tournament held at 1 Wing which included teams from 3 Wing, 4 Wing and ADSU.

S/L Thomas, 1 Wing Chaplain attended the Annual NATO Forces Lourdes Pilgrimage. 40,000 NATO troops attended - 17 personnel from 1 Wing Marville. The Colour Party was made up of 1 Wing personnel - FS T Pierce, FS Bushko, and Cpl Hynes.

1 Wing Accounts section was selected last August to carry out tests of a cash handling system whereby all Public and Non-Public funds would be in the custody of an NCO cashier. A Corporal was selected for this duty and the tests proved sufficiently satisfactory to Air Division Headquarters that the system has now been approved subject to minor modifications, for use throughout Air Division effective during May.

The Flight Simulator was shut down this month for a minor modification and repair programme while the squadrons were deployed to Etain.

During the month of May 1965, 109KU carried out 9 VIP flights in 57:40 hours of actual flying time.

S/L Frazer and F/L Huddlestone attended the Standard presentation ceremony at RAF Leuchars, Scotland. The trophy was presented by Princess Margaret to the 74th (Trinidad) Sqn RAF (RAF "Tiger" Sqn).

CO was Guest of Honour at a Mixed Mess Dinner at the Sergeant's Mess.

7-12 Jun 65

Visit by staff members of STU Chatham and 4 ST/R OTU Cold Lake.

10-22 Jun 65

All CF-104 squadron members, in rotation, manned a CF-104 from 1 Wing which was on static display at the Paris/Le Bourget annual Air Show. Caribou aircraft came through 1 Wing enroute to the air show. Tudor aircraft were flown into 1 Wing aboard Hercules aircraft. The Tudor was re-assembled at 1 Wing and flown and shown at the Paris Air Show.

CO and Mrs Avant paid an official visit to the US Army complex at Verdun, a retreat Ceremony and Parade on the commemoration (190th) of the US Army.

The Air Division Art Contest was again hosted by 1 Wing. F/L George McAffer of 1 Wing took first prize in "oils" and also the "best of the show".

Central Band Concert at the PMQ area this evening. (See photograph app "C").

The Mayor of Longuyon paid a courtesy visit to the Wing and the CO. He joined the CO for lunch at the Officers Mess.

Arrival on SF320 Pisa, F/L HTJ Gendron, Collegir Saint Alfonso via Merulan 31, Rome, Italy, employed approximately 33 days special duty at 1 Wing and other 1 Air Div units.

The last two courses of OFTT instructors commenced today. There were two pilots, 1/Lt TOR Olesen of the Royal Danish Air Force, Aalborg and 1/Lt Norbert Freudenspung, German Air Force, Neuburg. Two Germans from a Technical Branch were also here - 1/Lt Frans Alberti and Schebke, both from Wahn, Germany. This terminates the OFTT Instructor Courses for NATO pilots and we feel assured we have all gained some knowledge from the exchange of ideas and procedures.

Unusual occurence - SF151 (Yukon) was obliged to circle overhead for over one hour as a Bristol had gone off the end of the runway, closing it to all traffic. Some very green little children, (and grown ups) were pleased to arrive at Marville that day. New Wing Housing Officer F/O N Caulfield was on this flight.

Station visit of a group of French Canadian Newspapermen. W/C Edwards (A/CO) addressed the gathering, which also visited the unclassified installations on the unit.

Public Relations - A letter had been received from Mme Salanie of Montmedy asking if we could donate a box of old used clothing to a charitable organization of which she is patroness. F/L McLeish, in conjunction with the Ladies Guild, collected one nice-sized box of garments and they were sent to Mme Salani who sent them to the children of the Isle de Reunion.

On 11 July 65 while carrying out a Hawkeye low level mission in a CF-104, Captain Nicholas, USAF on exchange duties, encountered a mid-air collision with an RAF Canberra. The accident took place approximately one hundred miles north west of Munich. Both aircraft struck their left wingtip but the pilots managed to manoeuvre them into Baden Sollingen for a safe landing.

After tests by CFHQ/Matcom team, the TRN-17 TACAN beacon was declared unsuitable for use and was quarantined pending modifications. A TRN-6 TACAN, on loan from the USAF, was supplied as an interim facility.

F/L DL Simmermon assumed the position of WGTO eff 13 Jul 65 vice F/L HA Kitchen.

Station visit of USAF Reserve Officers - tour of facilities. (See photograph App C).

A summer "Sports Day" was organized as an Inter-Mess competition and included activities such as: Slow Pitch, Softball, Horseshoes, Golf, Indoor Broomball, Water Basketball, and Tug of War. The competition was very close with the Airmen's Club eventually winning. Approximately 400 personnel actively participated in the sports and many others joined as spectators.

109KU VIP Flights - During the month of August, 109KU flew 5 VIP trips logging 13:35 hours, carrying mainly the AOC, A/V/M Bradshaw and A/V/M Reyno between the Wings and Ramstein AFB.

Visit to 1 Wing and courtesy visit to CO of Mr Monserrat, Chief Engineer for Ponts et Chausees. Mr Monserrat is leaving to take up new post.

The annual ceremony was held at Adegem Belgium to honour Canadians who died during the battles in 1944 to clear the estuary of the River Scheldt. Two guards of honour, one from 1 Wing and one from the Belgian Army present arms in tribute to the fallen. This year, a dramatic addition was a poppy drop of 20,000 poppies by a 109KU Dakota. The following message was received from the Air Attache, Brussels: "Poppy drop at ceremony was unqualified success. Timing excellent. Accuracy of drop perfect. Crew may appreciate knowing that one of the poppies landed and remained on the hat of the King's Representative who was in the center of the ceremony. Such was the accuracy of the drop. Our congratulations and thanks to all concerned." (See photos Appendix C).

The 16 Sep 65 is a day Captain "Chuck" Summers of the US Army will always remember. Captain Summers, the Army Recponnaissance Liaison Officer at Marville, was authorized a trip in the back seat of a CF-104 with F/L E Greidanus, an OFTT instructor. At a position about 60 miles west of Lyon France the aircraft struck a bird which resulted in both crew members ejecting due to the engine failing.

Protocol Officer, S/L Cloutier represented CO at Handover Parade at French Air Force Base, Frescaty.

Arrowhead Arena - work was started this month on the construction of a large new foyer for the arena. This project, costing in the vicinity of $19,000.00 will be completed by spring and will provide much needed space for the large crowds attending Air Division League games and games with European teams.

Golf Club - The Golf Club largely through volunteer labour, was vastly improved this season both in the club house and on the links.

The DM Audit at 1 Wing was completed this month.

A contract was let to construct an addition to the swimming pool. This project, costing close to $10,000.00 was started this month and will provide badly needed dressing room facilities.

On 12 Oct 65 the new Audio Visual French Course (VIF) began with 94 students of all ranks and Monsier P Launoy as instructor.

On 13 Oct 65 the semi-annual Trade Examinations were held with 44 tradesmen as candidates.

Group of local citizens from Longwy Assisses visited 1 Wing - Commanding Officer briefed and welcomed them.

On 18 Nov 65 F/L Symington and F/O G Jensen were piloting a T-33 number 21614 on a poor weather day. While executing an approach at Phalsborg USAF airfield their aircraft struck some tree tops. F/L R Symington took control of the aircraft and ordered F/O Jensen to eject. Although F/O Jensen successfully ejected F/L Symington had insufficient altitude and was killed after ejecting.

Month of December 1965

Commanding Officer and Mrs Avant visited all sections during the Christmas period.

A new receiver site/radio room building was completed. The radio room continued to operate satisfactorily as the old building was torn down and the building erected around the old one.

Station Store (formerly PX) - a project, originated late in 1964 by W/C St Jean, for major improvements to the Station Store, was approved, and work commenced in September 1965. This project, costing some $40,000.00 was receiving final touches at the year's end and involved, in addition to a complete revamping of the building's interior, substantial new construction. The entrance to store was moved to face the parking lot.

Offices and departments were relocated, and new departments were built. The new Store is a real improvement on the old. Included in the project were renovations to the Wing Snack Bar - results were excellent.
