SS Atlantic - Ron Rockey

SS Atlantic

August 1952

We have not been able to locate any official detail pertaining to the SS Atlantic of the Italian Lines.

The following detail has been provided bt Ron Rockey who travelled to France on the SS Atlantic in August 1952.

I sailed on the SS Atlantic from Quebec City on 8 August 1952. I was able to meet a few other RCAF personnel who also were on their way to Europe. Wing Commander Walsh eventually became the Chief Administration Officer (CAdO) at 2 Wing. Wing Commander Jordan would take on the role of the Chief Technical Services Officer (CTSO) at 2 Wing. Other RCAF passengers included Sgt Ken Sutton (a cook) and myself - I was to be the Fire Chief. Also in the group were LACs Moore, Nolan, Forestall and Ricardson. These four LACs were to function as the maintenance crew for servicing the AOCs DC-3 Dakota that was to be stationed at Orly airfield in Paris.

We had an excellent boat trip and enjoyed all aspects of the ship. The ship was of Italian Registry and had been charted to bring refugees to Canada and was now returning for another load of refugees. It was a large ship and very fast. Our journey took seven days. We landed in Le Havre and took the train to Paris and eventual continuation to Grostenquin.
