Air Traffic Control

Historical Detail

Grand Bend's airport was built as the No. 9 Service Flying Training School's primary relief landing field in 1942. Student pilots used this airfield on short cross-country runs or during emergencies. It remained in use as a satellite airfield for Centralia until May 1961 whereupon it was handed over to the Canadian Army. The Army made little use of it and handed it back to the RCAF in May 1962. The airfield was last used by the RCAF during the summer of 1963 and was declared surplus the following January. The land and buildings were sold for $50,000 to the estate of one Gerald B Eagleson a few months later. The runways still exist as do a hangar, a garage, an H-barrack and the guard house. The airport is located on Highway 81's east side, south of town.
