You will notice the flag flying from the mast with a ball above the flag. In those days, the visual signals to the aircraft indicated circuit direction etc. Red Flag, black ball - right hand circuit. The tower "B" stand had to go out on the roof and change all this stuff as the wind dictated. Checkered flag - flying washed out. green flag, black ball - left hand cicuit. Those were the days.
