Air Traffic Control

Historical Detail

RCAF Station Aylmer was officially reformed on 12 April 1947. As of the following year, training was given there to those airmen who lacked basic knowledge in mathematics and physics but it wasn't until May 1949 that a new Academic Training School was formally established for that purpose. Around that time, the station also included a School of English. Also in 1949, the RCAF's No. 2 Manning Depot and the No. 1 Personnel Selection Unit (Airmen) were relocated from Trenton to Aylmer. Then in October 1950, the ATS was closed and the following March, the No. 2 "M" Depot and the No. 1 PSU were moved to RCAF Station St. John's, Quebec.

In April 1951, Station Aylmer went back to being a trades training centre. As the Technical Training School at Camp Borden couldn't handle the large number of trainees required in the growing RCAF, the No. 1 TTS was reformed at Aylmer. Also that month, the No. 2 Composite Training School (No. 2 KTS) moved in from Trenton. The KTS specialized in supply and clerical subjects and also trained Air Force Policemen, security investigators, recreational instructors, medical assistants, and ground-control approach specialists. One month later, the Aeronautical Engineering School began classes at Aylmer. The AES gave engineering officers eight weeks of instruction in airframes, aerodynamics, engines and instrumentation specific to Air Force requirements. The following October, the No. 11 Examination Unit was formed at Aylmer to assist the RCAF's Training Standards Branch in the preparation and administration of examinations.

Yet more changes occurred at Aylmer in the 1950-60s. In January 1954, the AES became the TTS's No. 1 Training Squadron. The following June, No. 2 KTS was also absorbed into No. 1 TTS. But in 1960, the Support Services School (SSS) was formed to train the same specialists as the KTS. Then, when the Medical Joint Training Centre was formed at Borden in 1959, Aylmer's Medical Assistance Course was incorporated into it. Also in 1960, No. 1 TTS became the Technical Officers Training School. By then, all technical training for airmen had moved to Borden. With its reduction in RCAF personnel requirements in the early 1960s, the TOTS was reduced in scope and re-located to Centralia as Aylmer was slated for closure. The station was disbanded on 30 September 1961.

Today, very little of the station remains. All of the wartime barracks are gone and only two of the original five hangars now stand. One, now part of the Police College, has been refurbished with bricks and the other has been covered with sheet metal. Most of the runways have been chopped up and what little of them that remains is used for police training. The College is located on Elgin Country Road 32, north-east of Aylmer proper.
