  17. Sabres on the ramp in front of 4 hangar undergoing engine run-up after a major inspection - June 1956.
It's hard to see in this photo, but a protective screen is in place over the intake to prevent personnel from getting "sucked-in" and each main wheel is chocked and chained to two steel stakes driven into the ground behind the aircraft to prevent "runaway" at high throttle settings. Ironically, these two Sabres did not end up in the scrap yard as most did. The first - AX 230231 was to settle in the USA privately owned by Ronald Reynolds as N231X, and AS 23301 went with the Golden Hawks until the team was disbanded, and now rests on a pedestal in Picton, Ontario.

  18. Sabres undergoing engine run-up after a major inspection - June 1956.
Note the protective screen in place on the engine air intake. The small British "mules" we had for towing the aircraft were a hazard in themselves. The brakes were most inadequate, and the Tech in the cockpit "riding the breaks" always had to be on alert. These mules were eventually replaced by the diesel fueled Mercedes Unimogs, which were really small trucks, and a wonderful towing unit.
